We are searching for an experienced Contract Tax, Trust, and Estate Planning Attorney to join our Legal and Tax Teams. Responsibilities:
Assist clients effectively by understanding their needs, analyzing the situation, then strategizing and deciding on a proper course of action. Keep client files properly organized and up to date. Provide clients with information about retirement plans, charitable contributions, and insurance choices. Act as a valued tax business advisor, leading client relationships on day-to-day tax matters for a diverse range of clients, from middle market to multinational corporations. Oversee and ensure the completion of federal, international, and state income tax returns, maintaining accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with all relevant regulations. Provide federal tax compliance and consulting services to industry-specific clients. Direct the accounting for income taxes in the U.S. and international subsidiaries, including the preparation of tax provisions and adherence to accounting standards. Provide strategic guidance and oversight for tax planning initiatives, including optimizing the global tax structure and managing tax compliance for international subsidiaries. Develop and execute short-term and long-term tax strategies, working closely with third-party service providers, internal stakeholders, and diverse clientele. Maintain a comprehensive understanding of tax resolution options (e.g., Installment Agreements, Offer in Compromise). Prepare and analyze IRS and State financial statements, effectively negotiate resolution programs with the IRS and State Revenue Departments and communicate with these entities on behalf of clients. Provide guidance on tax matters related to foreign operations, including income tax, VAT, withholding tax, and other regulatory requirements. Coordinate with specialty tax practices on complicated tax matters, including state and local, high net worth, international, research and development, credits, and incentives. Establish and maintain internal controls over tax accounting and reporting practices to ensure compliance and mitigate financial risks. Research complex tax matters, respond to IRS and other tax authority inquiries, and make informed recommendations to clients. Consult on technical matters and special projects, including corporate and flow-through taxation, accounting methods, and ASC 740. Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including legal and tax teams, to achieve firm objectives and maintain a culture of compliance and excellence. Mentor junior-level tax professionals, ensuring they develop the skills necessary to resolve tax matters and provide high-quality service. Stay informed about legislative changes in tax law and ensure ongoing compliance across all areas of responsibility. Manage client engagement processes, including billing, collections, and ensuring client profitability targets are met. Qualifications:
Active member of the ABA (American Bar Association). Must have worked on estate planning and probate law issues for at least 1-2 years. Excellent communication skills, especially in highly stressful and emotional situations. Understanding of a variety of real estate matters, including title insurance, wills and trusts, property management, and litigation. Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school. Active California State Bar membership in good standing. Minimum eight (8) years experience in Corporate Tax Law, including compliance issues and streamlining filing compliance procedures. Experience with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) is required. Experience in high net worth estate, corporate, and tax planning required. Extensive corporate, estate planning, and probate law experience required, including the creation of wills, trusts, and related documents. Working knowledge of title insurance, wills, trusts, property management, and residential and commercial real estate law, including litigation. At least seven (7) years of experience in federal tax compliance and advisory services. Extensive experience corresponding successfully with the IRS, including Revenue Officers. Demonstrated expertise in tax management with thorough knowledge of state and federal tax regulations. Sense of urgency and commitment to the quality and timely completion of projects. Experience in representing clients in tax disputes and litigation. Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to manage projects and coordinate with tax and legal teams effectively. Strong analytical skills with a proven ability to manage a diverse caseload. Excellent communication, leadership, and client service skills. Commitment to continuous learning to maintain knowledge of relevant tax strategies. Demonstrated commitment to ethical integrity in professional conduct.
