Skills and Abilities Required
Hold a current, valid Oklahoma Registered Nurse License or LPN License BLS CPR certification required. At least one year of RN experience, pediatric experience encouraged. Computer literate; excellent communication ability. Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations. Ability to be flexible, handle a variety of tasks and manage multiple tasks. Organization skills are preferred. Knowledge of medication and side effects. Ability to maintain privacy, confidentiality and efficiency. Working Conditions:
Primarily inside working conditions with outside exposure when traveling from school to school or at times on the school grounds for first aid/emergency health issues.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to run, stoop and kneel. Employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color and depth perception.
Description Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Work under the direction of the head Registered nurse. Provides direct nursing care to students by monitoring vital signs, administering first aid and emergency health care, administer medications as needed, assist with health conditions and many others. Notifies parents or legal guardians when needed of health status of students. Provide specialized health care procedures and services for special needs students. Participates in IEP as required. Implement Lawton Public Schools Health policies and procedures. Assist school physician, as contracted, in conducting athletic physical examinations. Assists in the control of communicable diseases. Assist diabetic students in their daily care when required by physician orders. Assists with the yearly training of LPS staff to administer medications to students in the district. Trains LPS staff on medical issues such as diabetes, seizures, and severe allergies during the school year on students with diagnosed health conditions per physician orders. Coordinates school health management issues at assigned site(s). Cooperates with school personnel in identifying and meeting physical, social and emotional needs of schoolchildren. Promotes and maintains a safe and healthful environment for students. Acts as health advocate on behalf of students and families as appropriate. Communicates with physician and other healthcare professionals as needed. Works with school personnel to ensure students meet State immunization requirements. Maintains accurate health and nursing records on all students within the assigned school/job. Assists in identification of students at risk for physical and psychosocial problems. Reports incidents of suspected child abuse according to state law and LPS policy. Must exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Must keep abreast of current trends in nursing and in the field of school health, as well as state and federal laws relating to health and social issues. Must demonstrate the exercise of professional judgement in making decisions. Must follow HIPAA and FERPA laws. Must communicate appropriately and accurately to students, parents, administrators and other school personnel. Travel to any LPS school as needed to address health issues, give trainings, conduct health plans and others as assigned. Develop and implement health plans, 504 health plan addendums, and IEP health plan addendums or students with health conditions. Health plans and medical addendums will be updated each school year per the RN. Perform other duties assigned by the head Registered nurse or Special Services Director.
