This role will underwrite new Environmental business within the Environmental Division of Argo Group, according to authority level and established guidelines. The AVP of Environmental Underwriting takes an active role in partnering with the SVP of Underwriting to develop and implement underwriting strategy that identifies profitable market opportunities, new product development, positive agent relationships, operational requirements and financial assessments. The AVP Underwriting is responsible for assisting the SVP Underwriting in the effective management of staff, processes, agent relationships and underwriting results. This position is responsible for hiring and directing the day-to-day activities of certain underwriting staff. Job Responsibilities: Underwrite an individual portfolio of Environmental Insurance coverage lines including General Liability, Contractors Pollution Liability, Professional Liability, Premises Pollution Liability and Excess Liability. This position will be expected to be a top generator of new, profitable business for the team. Cultivate and manage agent and broker relationships with an emphasis on Argo's reputation for quick, responsive, service-oriented underwriting. Manage and provide leadership to multiple direct reports. Conduct development reviews and engage direct reports in developmental and skill building opportunities. Establish and communicate underwriting profit goals and other measurements including new business, renewal retention, and service standards. Partner with the SVP of Underwriting to develop strategies for growth and new products, as well as actions to resolve adverse trends or deviations from established underwriting standards Cultivate and maintain relationships within and outside Argo Group to develop and drive new business opportunities. Work with internal and external business units to develop joint business plans, value propositions and cross-marketing programs. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: This position requires a high-energy, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards. Additional qualifications and knowledge include but are not limited to: Bachelor's degree from an accredited university and 10 years' industry experience. Casualty and Excess Liability experience strongly preferred. Proven leadership capabilities with a sound influence in dealing with challenging situations. Demonstrates a quick, highly responsive work ethic with brokers and agents. Demonstrates significant contribution to underwriting profit. Independent decision maker - takes full responsibility for making decisions and consequences associated with decisions. Recognized as a leader within the organization that provides advice and guidance to others. Demonstrates knowledge of the environmental, casualty and excess liability external market and contributes to the development of business strategy. Have established relationships within the environmental liability community with external clients and professional network. Continually seeks opportunities for portfolio growth and potential agent opportunities. Effective oral and written communication, including influence and negotiation skills. Experience in delivering presentations to all internal and external audiences. Proven employee development, mentoring, coaching and performance management skills. Proficient in the use of computer programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, ImageRight.
