Position Description

Title: Custodian Reports to: Principal

Subcategory: Elementary Classification: Classified

Effective: October 13, 2004 Work Year: 12 months

Salary Schedule: CSEA

Basic Function: Under general supervision, follow a schedule and perform custodial duties necessary to maintain assigned rooms, equipment, buildings, and adjacent areas in a clean, orderly and secure manner.

Distinguishing Characteristics: Positions in this classification are distinguished from those of 'Head Custodian' and 'Assistant Head Custodian' by being assigned and following a schedule to perform specific light maintenance and custodial duties at a school site.

Representative Duties: This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements.

Sweep, mop, wax, resurface, and seal floors; vacuum rugs and carpets; dust, wash, and polish furniture and woodwork; empty and clean waste receptacles.

Wash windows, walls, sinks, and fountains; clean restrooms; clean and wash kitchen/cafeteria areas; polish metal work; fill paper and soap dispensers; clean chalk boards and trays.

Sweep sidewalks and curbs; pick up debris from school grounds; may water lawn area.

Secure buildings and facilities by turning out lights; locking doors, windows, and gates; arming alarm systems.

Move, arrange, set up and dismantle furniture and equipment for sporting and special events and meetings; stack and store furniture and equipment; may transport goods from one location to another.

Participate in major cleaning of school plant during student vacation periods.

Work cooperatively with school and office staff to maintain a clean and functional work environment.

Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to one year of increasingly responsible experience cleaning and maintaining building areas.

Skills: Modern cleaning methods; appropriate use of materials and equipment to clean a variety of surfaces and furniture; basic safety practices related to cleaning methods.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

Methods, materials, and equipment used in cleaning various types of surfaces and furniture.

First aid and safety knowledge related to cleaning methods and practices.

Ability to:

Meet District standards of professional attitude as outlined in Board Policy 4219.21 Code of Ethics for Classified Personnel.

Maintain work schedules in performing tasks.

Understand and follow a work schedule.

Perform light to moderate manual labor.

Work without immediate supervision.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Working Conditions:

Environment: School facility; indoor and outdoor environment; regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors; contact with cleaning agents and chemicals; may be required to work with harsh and toxic substances; may be required to work in inclement weather without effective protection from sun, cold, rain, and wind; required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as SCBA, eye protection, and face protection; work within enclosed spaces or heights above ground level; may be required to work around loud noises; work around moving mechanical parts and electrical current.

Physical Abilities: Requires mobility to stand, stoop, reach, walk and bend for prolonged periods; perform work involving frequent lifting, pushing, and/or pulling of objects weighing 50 pounds, and occasional lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects weighing up to 100 pounds; lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and moving heavy objects, furniture, and equipment; climbing stairs, ladders and ramps; walking or standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment; bending at the waist; reaching overhead and horizontally.

Requirements / Qualifications

Any combination of training, experience, and/or education equivalent to one year of increasingly responsible experience cleaning and maintaining building areas. Fingerprint and TB clearance will be required as a condition of employment. Verification of COVID-19 vaccination status.

Hours: Monday thru Friday 1:30pm to 6:00pm at Wildwood Elementary
