Do you love taking on big challenges that require exceptionally creative solutions? Do you deeply understand how an incredible camera experience should work? As part of our Camera Technologies group, you’ll help design the innovative technology that allows each generation of Apple products to produce photos even more incredible than the last. You’ll design and develop groundbreaking ideas for everything involved in our camera systems, from sensor to lens. You’ll collaborate with teams across Apple to research, design, develop, test, and qualify camera hardware for Apple products. Together, we’ll craft a magical photography experience that redefines what millions of customers can expect from their cameras.

The Camera Hardware Engineering group is responsible for all research, design, development, test, and qualification of camera hardware for Apple products. The team is looking for an Optical Engineer to develop and support custom lens design and development.

Description

  1. Work on new lens designs, characterization and integration into CMOS imager sensor based camera modules.
  2. Complete analysis of the optical element's influence on the image quality characteristics of the camera module.
  3. Work with suppliers on prototype design and manufacturing.
  4. Troubleshoot issues with suppliers by defining proper metrology, requesting and analyzing the necessary data, and making a decision on the solution.
  5. Communicate your design decision to the cross-functional team.
  6. Drive your own schedule without a large overhead.
  7. Take design into production.

Minimum Qualifications

Key Qualifications

  • Resourceful, prepared to champion your work in front of a large group, ready to take initiative, enjoys working in cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in lens design, tolerance analysis.
  • Experience in stray light analysis.
  • Proficiency with ZEMAX, CODE V, FRED, LightTools, etc.
  • Ability to perform comprehensive optical and image quality characterization of the lens and the camera module.
  • Ability to communicate optical design decisions to multi-functional teams.
  • Experience making difficult design decisions with limited information.
  • Ability to analyze production data and extract relevant data.
  • Collaborate with the assembly and packaging groups to support integration of camera lens into module.

Preferred Qualifications

Education & Experience

BS and a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience.

Additional Requirements

  • High energy, multi-tasker, resourceful problem solver, ability to work under pressure, take initiative.
  • Working knowledge of opto-mechanics and optics manufacturing.
  • Track record of imaging related innovations.

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $143,100 and $264,200, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
