Position summary: The CAD Technician supports various phases of projects ranging from concept generation and initial design all the way through final hardware delivery and volume production. The types of projects vary from exploratory trade studies to highly detailed electro-mechanical systems. Initiative: CAD Technicians don't have a daily agenda given to them and are expected to take it upon themselves to work closely with customers, vendors and ACT personnel to fulfill projects goals and objectives.
Technical knowledge: We are looking for a candidate who has a strong academic background, coupled with hands-on skills and design and fabrication capabilities.
Teamwork skills: As a member of the product development team, the ideal candidate must have the ability to give and receive encouragement and constructive criticism, communicate effectively, and work cooperatively with team members to achieve common goals.
Critical thinking skills: The product development of customer and projects vary widely, and the strategies and design approaches that worked for one program may be completely different for the next opportunity. As a member of the Product Development department the CAD Technician will be engaged in work related to:
- The development of 3D CAD models of complex parts and assemblies in Solidworks
- Generation of 2D drawings for external vendors and internal fabrication
- Generation of assembly work instructions
- Assisting in the fabrication of prototype units
Responsibilities Include:
- Developing new mechanical designs under the direction of a Product Engineer and within the time constraints required to be competitive in our market.
- Creation of Interface Control Drawings in support of program objectives
- 2D/3D mechanical design of our products and work instructions to effectively communicate purchasing and build needs for both assemblies and components
- Creation of part numbers, Bill of Materials, and routings within our MRP system
- Modification of existing products to meet custom requirements
- Engineering Change Notices and updating product documentation to meet "As-Built" conditions
- Provides technical writing support for the creation of operation / maintenance manuals and related parts lists or other documentation
- Primary ownership of Document Control to ensure proper revision history and distribution of product and component data
- Effectively communicating design progress and changes to multiple teams internally and assisting engineers in presenting updates externally to customers
- Work with various team members to understand project requirements and ensure designs comply with them, including but not limited to performance, cost, lead time, export controls, and quality standards
- Communicate with external vendors supporting the fabrication of custom components
- Working with multiple internal teams to ensure efficient flow of information related to design, BOMs, MRP, or purchasing requirements
- Assisting with the fabrication of prototype units including but not limited to mechanical assembly, installation of hardware like rivets and rivnuts, basic material handling and processing, and wiring.
- Using lifting equipment like overhead gantries
- US citizenship or permanent residency strongly preferred due to ITAR requirements
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology with 0-3 years' experience, or a minimum of an associate's degree in 3D Drafting and Mechanical Engineering Technology with 3-5 years of Design experience.
- Proficiency in using SolidWorks, Microsoft Office, MRP Systems
- Experience with design of mechanical systems and design for manufacturability
- Experience using GD&T tolerancing and complex 2D drawing generation
- Strong problem-solving ability and desire to iterate complicated solutions
- Ability to work autonomously and seek out information from multiple sources
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Experience with basic fabrication techniques
