The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginia. The VDH is made up a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts.

Performs patient care as a nurse practitioner with limited or no on-site access to a physician for guidance and oversight. Performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes controlled substances, may directly perform or direct others to perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, and develop and implement care plans including the administration of medication and case management. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner by state code. All actions and decision as Nurse Practitioner will be within limits defined by the Nurse Practice Act of Virginia, the Regulations Governing the Certification of Nurse Practitioners and the Practice Agreement for Prescriptive Authority. Within these limits, the NP will make diagnoses, prescribe treatments and drug therapy and refer patients to appropriate department practitioners or outside specialists as warranted. The NP consults with the physician if a condition is deemed to be beyond the NPs scope of practice. The NP will also seek consultation in situations where experience and knowledge is limited or before undertaking an unfamiliar activity.

Minimum Qualifications • Ability to develop patient management plans; excellent clinical judgment with the ability to know the limits of practice and when to seek consultation • Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with staff, patients, and the public; ability to participate in educational and professional programs

Additional Considerations • Prior public health or community health with significant clinical experience in prenatal, STI, family planning, pediatrics and family practice preferred
