The Nonprofit Accountant manages and oversees the financial activities of the nonprofit organization, ensuring that all transactions are recorded accurately and in compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. This includes managing budgets, grants, preparing financial statements, handling payroll, ensuring tax compliance, and providing financial analysis to support the organization's mission and goals.

Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Recordkeeping:
- Maintain accurate financial records of the organization's income and expenditures.
- Ensure proper classification of transactions in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards.
- Reconcile bank statements and financial accounts on a regular basis.
- Budget Management:
- Assist in the preparation and monitoring of the organization's annual budget.
- Track expenses against budget allocations and provide reports on budget performance.
- Advise management on budgetary adjustments and potential cost-saving opportunities.
- Financial Reporting:
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
- Ensure financial statements are compliant with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and nonprofit regulations.
- Assist with the preparation of audit schedules and coordinate with external auditors for the annual audit process.
- Tax Compliance:
- Prepare and file nonprofit tax returns, including IRS Form 990 and state-specific filings.
- Ensure the organization complies with all tax regulations, including charitable solicitation registrations, payroll taxes, and other nonprofit-specific requirements.
- Assist with tax reporting and maintain accurate records to meet regulatory standards.
- Grant and Fund Management:
- Track and manage grant funding, including preparing reports for funders and ensuring proper allocation of funds.
- Ensure proper documentation of restricted and unrestricted funds.
- Monitor the use of grant funds and prepare financial reports for grant compliance.
- Internal Controls and Auditing:
- Develop and implement internal controls to ensure the accuracy of financial transactions and prevent fraud or mismanagement.
- Assist with the preparation for internal and external audits, ensuring compliance with all regulations and audit requirements.
- Payroll Management:
- Oversee payroll processing, ensuring compliance with relevant employment laws and nonprofit standards.
- Manage employee benefit programs and tax withholdings.
- Financial Analysis and Advice:
- Provide financial analysis to support decision-making by senior management and the board.
- Assist in evaluating financial performance and recommending improvements to operational efficiency.
- Documentation and Record Retention:
- Maintain and organize all financial records, ensuring they are easily accessible and properly retained per legal requirements.
- Keep documentation of all financial transactions, grants, donations, and invoices.
- Education:
- A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is preferred but not required.
- CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or non-profit accounting certification is a plus.
- Experience:
- At least 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization.
- Experience with nonprofit-specific financial management, including grants, fund accounting, and IRS Form 990.
- Knowledge of Nonprofit Regulations:
- Familiarity with nonprofit accounting principles, IRS rules for tax-exempt organizations, and relevant regulations.
- Knowledge of nonprofit financial reporting and compliance requirements.
- Accounting Software:
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, MIP Fund Accounting, Sage Intacct) is required.
- Strong Excel skills for financial analysis and reporting.
- Attention to Detail:
- Ability to work with precision and attention to detail, ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance.
- Analytical Skills:
- Ability to analyze financial data, interpret trends, and provide insights to management and the board.
- Communication Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to report financial data and explain complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Ability to interact professionally with donors, board members, and other external parties.
- Organizational Skills:
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently while adhering to strict financial guidelines.
