These positions are located in the Roads and Waste Management divisions of Nashville Department of Transportation and the Sanitation Management division of Metro Water Services. These positions are responsible for operating various types of large complex vehicles and equipment associated with road maintenance and/or waste collection and disposal and for performing other skilled and unskilled labor functions. This position is also responsible for operating pavers, milling machines, bucket trucks, Automated/Semi-Automated collection vehicles, Front-End Loader and a Roll-Off Trucks used in collecting and transporting recyclables and refuse on a scheduled route to and from various locations.

Work Hours: Work schedules may be morning, afternoon or evening shifts and could also consist of weekends and holidays.

  1. Operates gasoline and diesel powered equipment under transport or construction conditions.
  2. Safe and efficient operation of collection trucks on a scheduled route.
  3. Accurate reading of maps and written directions.
  4. Delivery of collected material at a processing facility.
  5. Routine, daily and detailed maintenance, safety checks and services on various equipment.
  6. Prepares written documentation of inspections, equipment defects and/or other operational problems.
  7. May assist in the training and instruction of lesser skilled employees.
  8. Serves as lead person and/or participates in the work of laboring personnel.
  9. Operates various equipment/vehicles of equal or lesser skill difficulty.
  1. Eighth (8th) grade education and one (1) year of verifiable experience operating gasoline or diesel powered equipment or vehicles.
  2. Must be able to drive and operate equipment which utilizes a "joy stick".
  3. Must demonstrate proficiency in the operation of Automated/Semi-Automated collection vehicles, Front-End Loader and/or a Roll-Off Truck during employer provided training.

Failure to demonstrate sufficient proficiency on equipment during training and/or throughout first 6 months probationary period may result in termination of employment

  • Must pass pre-employment drug/alcohol test and physical exam
  • Must be able to read, comprehend and follow street maps and other written directions.

For this specific position, "substitution will not be considered"

LICENSE REQUIRED
Valid "Class B" or higher Commercial Driver License
