An organization is hiring a Chief General Counsel. This position will provide oversight for legal affairs including: providing strategic privileged legal advice to the Commissioner and executive management to ensure the department’s operations, programs, and policies are administered in compliance with applicable legal requirements; advising on all complex legal issues with a focus on appropriate consideration of risk exposure and balancing of operational needs; providing litigation defense in a particularly litigious environment and negotiating resolution of matters in state, federal, and administrative venues, including exercising delegated authority from the Attorney General for state and federal habeas matters; advising and drafting legislative and regulatory proposals; serving as the legal expert as a member of the Commissioner’s executive management team; and set strategic direction and provide leadership to the Office of Legal Affairs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

To be qualified for and considered for this position, ensure that your resume contains descriptions of your work experiences sufficient for comparison against the requirements stated below and indicate the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.

  1. J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and current license to practice law in the state of Minnesota.
  2. Seven (7) years experience as a licensed practicing attorney, including history of providing legal advice to clients and executive level leadership
  3. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills sufficient to analyze a variety of complex legal issues, identify areas of research, conduct research and evaluate alternatives, make sound decisions and provide legal advice to executives and management
  4. Knowledge of principles and practices of legal, ethical and professional rules of conduct
  5. Ability to think creatively and approach projects and tasks from a continuous improvement perspective
  6. Strong legal writing, legal analysis, and verbal communication skills
  7. Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are strongly desired of applicants seeking consideration for this position:

  1. Experience in law relating to the administration of corrections programs, policies, and operations
  2. Knowledge of administration of criminal sentences and the corrections system
  3. Experience drafting legislation
  4. Supervisory or management experience
