The BPS CMO exists to provide operational, leadership, and strategic services to the schools in the Breakthrough Schools network. The CMO is committed to providing high-quality services to the schools and bolstering the high-impact performance of the schools, making the CMO and network greater than the sum of its parts. The CMO provides economies of scale when it comes to staffing, tools, and time-based efficiencies. We serve 3,000 K-8 grade scholars across five campuses and employ over 450 staff members.

OPPORTUNITY

Breakthrough Public Schools seeks an experienced, strategic leader to serve as the Managing Director of Schools. Reporting to the Head of Schools, the MD, Schools is also a member of the network's Extended Leadership team.

The Managing Director of Schools will serve in the capacity of what other districts might refer to as a Principal Manager. The role will coach, support, evaluate, and develop school leaders to meet ambitious school performance goals. In addition, this leader will help to create key structures to ensure strong execution of the overall academic and operational plans of schools, and work to teach leaders how to execute, and insist they do it. Working with Principals will include coaching them to develop the talent and capacity of their school leadership teams.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Managing Principals and Leadership Teams

Recruit, manage, and build capacity in the assigned caseload of principals (~3) Collaborate with the Head of Schools to ensure high-quality implementation of the educational design and vision, as well as the desired scholar and adult culture Establish clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for each leadership position and clear structures to collect data to measure the KPIs Embody the "teach and insist" philosophy of leadership, ensuring leadership teams have excellent training for leadership protocols and hold them accountable for delivering high-level results Document leadership practices and protocols clearly and consistently to ensure long-term documentation of the foundational school leadership development practices Create clear and consistent expectations for all members of assigned schools' leadership teams, including strong protocols for communication, meeting deadlines, and creating staff culture Ensure leadership check-ins are grounded in scholar outcomes and individual follow-through action items and coach Principals on the effective development of their leadership teams Create strong systems for regular formal and informal communication between assigned staff, leadership teams, and the network Collaborate with the MD, Operations to ensure that schools have strong operational practices, including but not limited to scholar enrollment, retention, and attendance; budget management; parent and scholar satisfaction, School Culture & Climate

In collaboration with the broader Academic Team and the school leadership, set the overall vision for the school culture, and assist in creating both vertical and horizontal alignment across schools Creates processes and protocols to ensure schools have well-defined routines and procedures that maximize consistency and scholar experience Monitor the quality and effectiveness of school-wide expectations for school culture In collaboration with School Principals, create systems to diagnose and address potential gaps in school culture In collaboration with the Academics Team and Principals, ensure the network-wide development and codification of grade-level Social-Emotional development practices Encourage and monitor effective communications with families, and coach leaders to respond positively to parent feedback Building Instructional Capacity

Continuously drive action to meet our long-term academic outcomes for scholars Collaborating with the Academic Team to ensure that schools are consistently and effectively implementing our Academic Strategy Roadmap Ensure school leaders are improving their practice as instructional leaders Track scholar outcomes, diagnose trends, and work to ensure campuses consistently reach equitable experiences and outcomes Build the capacity of school leadership teams to develop and implement systems that allow them to be regularly observing, providing feedback to APs and teachers, and ensuring that changes are implemented Ensure that each School Leadership Team has consistent internal structures for Data-Driven Instruction (DDI), and help to assess the quality of implementation of DDI practices Assess the quality and effectiveness of school-based Professional Development for coaching the Data-Driven Instruction practices Ensure assigned Principals analyze specific grade level, classroom, and scholar data trends to adjust instruction plans to meet the needs of the scholars; Talent Management and Development

Develop principals as effective talent management leaders who skillfully coach, manage, develop, and retain other school leaders and teachers In collaboration with the Academic Team and the People Team, assist in creating the vision and expectations for staff culture through network-wide and school-wide initiatives Create consistent forms of formal and informal ways to celebrate the work of both teachers and leaders to create genuine joy and commitment to the mission Support principals in identifying strengths and gaps in staff culture at the school level and in developing action plans to further strengthen staff culture Define structures and protocols for accountability conversations for leaders and teachers who are not implementing the vision of school culture Collaborate with the Academics Team to plan and execute network-wide yearlong professional development for teachers and school leaders Assist in the development of leadership pathways to create a pipeline of teachers to leaders and leaders to principals QUALIFICATIONS

Evidence of strong scholar achievement in previous teaching experiences Evidence of successful adult leadership and strong school or organization outcomes in previous leadership experience Skilled developer of talent, including managers of managers Strong practices in creating and adhering to clear and consistent structures, systems, and procedures Experience in school organizations with a track record of producing strong scholar outcomes and/or leadership development practices Excellent communication skills, especially with fellow leadership team members Extremely high standards for scholar achievement A team player with relentlessness in doing whatever it takes to ensure success Unquestioned integrity and commitment to the mission and values of Breakthrough Public Schools Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and "roll-up-my-sleeves" attitude EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

7+ y ears of experience in leadership roles in an urban school setting At least three years of school-based leadership experience as a Principal and 3-5 years teaching of experience, preferred A minimum of a Bachelor's degree, Master's Degree is preferred Experience in and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion work Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills Demonstrated experience of effective project management and work plan implementation A deep connection and understanding of the Breakthrough Public Schools and the Cleveland community is strongly preferred Willingness to attend occasional evening and weekend meetings and events Proficient in the knowledge and use of technical computer applications, including Google Suite.
