Betty Shabazz International Charter School (BSICS) is looking to hire a qualified, compassionate and experienced School Social Worker for the 2025-26 school year. The selected applicant can be retired, either fill this position as an employee or independent contractor, and must have a valid Illinois Professional Educator License endorsed as a School Social Worker OR be a State licensed LCSW.
Established in 1998, BSICS is a network comprised of two K-8 Chicago elementary campuses. Our Betty Shabazz Academy campus is located at 7823 S. Ellis Ave in Chatham. Our Barbara A. Sizemore Academy campus is located at 6547 S. Stewart Ave in Englewood.
Our academic model incorporates history, culture and STEM as well as community service and character development into all aspects of our rigorous curriculum, school routines and physical environments. As a result, daily, our students are taught that with historical understanding, culture, community, planning, proper values, discipline, and individual and collective work they can overcome any challenge, academically excel and become transformational, next generation, global leaders.
The School Social Worker is jointly responsible for the social development, progress, tracking, assessment and support of all students assigned to their caseload.
Specialty Functions:
- Provide counseling services to students using individual, group and classroom methodologies
- Provide consultive services to faculty, co-team members, parents, and other appropriate parties regarding socio-cultural and emotional factors impacting the student learning experiences of those in their assigned caseload
- Perform diagnostic assessments for students needing evaluations, re-evaluations or special evaluations and participate in all meetings/conferences to determine eligibility for and adequacy of services on an annual or as-needed basis
Essential Functions:
All School Social Workers are expected to utilize a continuous improvement process that refines his or her practice. Each School Social Worker should:
- Participate on problem-solving teams in the school to support student success and collaborate with community agencies to promote accessibility of services to families and students on their caseload
- Provide referrals, collaborate with outside services, and link services and intervention strategies in a way that enhances the education development of students on their caseload
- Exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and exercise sound, professional judgment especially in interactions with administration, colleagues, families, and students
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements:
- A graduate degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
- A valid School Social Worker license and endorsement issue by ISBE or a LCSW license issued by the State's licensing board.
Physical Requirements:
- Light Work: Exerting up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally, or up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
