We are currently looking for a skilled and motivated Workers' Compensation Defense Legal Assistant / Legal Secretary to join our team. Position Overview:
In this in-person role, you will work with a dedicated attorney and assist with managing cases, preparing legal documents, communicating with clients, and generally ensuring that our attorneys have the support they need to successfully represent our clients. You will be an integral part of the team, helping ensure that cases are handled efficiently, deadlines are met, and clients receive exceptional service.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist attorneys in all stages of workers' compensation defense litigation, including case preparation, discovery, and trial support.
- Draft, review, and file legal documents such as pleadings, motions, subpoenas, settlement agreements, and discovery responses.
- Maintain case files and manage case calendars to ensure deadlines are met and materials are prepared in advance.
- Prioritize all incoming mail and files and advise attorneys on any pertinent information.
- Communicate with clients, medical providers, and opposing counsel to facilitate case progression and gather necessary documentation.
- Assist attorneys in preparing for hearings, depositions, and conferences.
- Coordinate the scheduling of depositions, medical appointments and interpreting/court reporting services.
- Obtain medical reports, subpoenaed records and other evidence to support defenses.
The Ideal Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or certificate in Paralegal Studies (or equivalent work experience).
- Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Legal Assistant, Legal Secretary, or in a similar role within a workers’ compensation or personal injury law firm.
- Knowledge of legal terminology.
- Knowledge of California workers' compensation laws and procedures is a plus, but not required.
- Proficiency in EAMS/FileNet.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams).
- Proficiency in case management software such as MerusCase is a plus, but not required.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple cases, and meet deadlines efficiently.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with clients and colleagues professionally.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
