Job Description / Essential Elements:

HEALTH ASSISTANT I

Responsibility:

Under the supervision of the site Principal and credentialed District Nurse, performs a variety of tasks and responsibilities as support for the nurse. Such tasks and responsibilities may include clerical activities, provide health office procedures and responsibility of new professional health program duties.

Essential Functions:

1. Following training by and under supervision of a credentialed school nurse, provides specialized physical health care procedures, i.e. catheterization, blood glucose monitoring, tracheotomy suctioning, etc. to specific students.

2. Provides clerical assistance to the nurse, schedules appointments for nurse as needed, and compiles student lists.

3. Maintains pupil health records in confidential manner, initiates health records for all students, verifies immunization records of each child, and verifies emergency card information.

4. Monitors medication logs for each student and inventories and requests supplies and materials.

5. Records standard information on health records, screens health records for nurse, and transfers records of students leaving district.

6. Assists District Nurse with screenings as needed, logs all first aid provided to students, and contacts parents regarding child when appropriate.

7. Administers medication to students.

8. Possesses ability to read, understand, and carry out oral and written directions.

Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Assists students in personal care such as toileting, dressing, grooming, and eating.

2. Feeds children unable to feed themselves using special feeding equipment as necessary.

3. Composes correspondence, completes incident reports, and maintains an efficient filing system of records.

4. Understands all statuary regulations/policies and informs staff of these regulations/policies.

5. Provides medical assistance consistent with training and policy.

6. Distributes information to parents and community as directed.

7. Opens and closes Health Office each day and at beginning/end of each school year.

8. Reviews CPR procedures and cleans supplies and equipment.

9. Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:

1. Acceptable clerical skills in filing, typing and general office organization.

2. Ability to function within legal and ethical constraints of position; trustworthy and confidential.

3. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with children and adults.

4. Possession of valid California Drivers License.

5. Willingness to work independently and as member of a team.

6. Must provide own transportation if required to work at more than one school site.

Education/Experience:

1. High school graduate.

2. Completion of First Aid Training and current CPR Certification (trainer status a plus).

Physical Requirements:

1. Position regularly performs heavy physical labor requiring ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move heavy objects or materials.

2. Great physical demand for strength and endurance.

3. Physical functions involve heavy physical exertion.

4. Lifting over 50 lbs. or carrying any object over 25 lbs.

Requirements / Qualifications

CPR and First Aid Certification required
