Position: Director of Children's Ministry
JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Children's Ministry at Trinity United Methodist Church will play a key role in realizing our church's vision: to be a Christian community, inviting all to gather in love, grow in faith, and give back in joyful service. This role places special emphasis on nurturing the faith of our children. This involves helping them deepen their understanding of what it means to be Christian and fostering a personal relationship with Christ. Additionally, it involves supporting and equipping families in their journey to pass on a vibrant, living faith to the next generation.
The Director of Children's Ministry is responsible for overseeing all aspects of this ministry. This includes selecting, supervising, and training leaders; managing all curriculum, teaching, materials, and resources for faith formation; coordinating facility usage; and managing the budget for robust ministry to children from birth to 5th grade. Moreover, the Director will collaborate closely with the Ministries Team at Trinity to seamlessly integrate children into all facets of church life.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Ministry Development and Management:
Develop and execute impactful and engaging programming for children, from infants to fifth graders.
Create and evaluate new ministries while continuously improving existing ones to meet Children's Ministry objectives.
Coordinate and direct special events such as Vacation Bible School, Promotion Sunday, Fall Carnival, Third Grade Bible, Easter Eggstravaganza, and others.
Coordinate baptism services for children and their families, serving as the primary liaison for staff and volunteers.
Prepare and maintain a calendar of Children's activities to be communicated to the church and community in a timely fashion in collaboration with staff and volunteers.
Communicate and promote opportunities, events, and ministries within the scope of this position, within both the congregation and the broader community.
Faith Formation:
Provide diverse, innovative, and ongoing opportunities for children and families to grow and mature in their faith through church ministries.
Lead innovative, fun, and engaging Sunday morning and Sunday night programs for children.
Recognize, develop, celebrate, and manage all milestones of life and faith for Trinity's families.
Offer pastoral care and support to children and their families.
Invest in children relationally by celebrating their achievements and attending extracurricular activities such as sporting events, performances, etc.
Team Leadership:
Develop, empower, and support a team of adult volunteers who will guide children in all aspects of our ministries.
Recruit, train, and manage a team of childcare workers responsible for safe and purposeful childcare during Sunday services and throughout the week.
Recruit, supervise, and intentionally guide Children's Ministry Interns as they lead and learn in a ministry setting with the internship being a vital milestone in Trinity's ministry to children and their families.
Collaboration:
Collaborate closely with Trinity's Ministries team, including worship staff, youth staff, adult discipleship staff, and Trinity Child Development Center staff, to create whole-church ministry opportunities for Children and their families.
Work closely with the Trinity Child Development Center to minister effectively to all children at Trinity.
Network with Huntsville area children's ministers and the North Alabama conference to broaden and enhance our ministry to children and their families.
Attend weekly staff meetings, monthly ministry meetings, quarterly Church Council meetings, and other meetings as needed to communicate Children's Ministry needs to others on staff and in leadership.
Curriculum and Resources:
Select, adapt, and manage age-appropriate curricula based on the church's demographics and emerging possibilities.
Procure and maintain all resources required for effective Children's Ministry, including space, supplies, and materials.
Budget Management:
Utilizing a collaborative mission-driven investment approach, develop, implement and manage an annual budget for the ministry to Children and their families which clearly tells the story of Trinity's investment in children.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must have a commitment to Jesus Christ and the desire and ability to foster faith development in others, particularly youth and their families.
Commitment to the theology and teachings of the United Methodist Church.
Energetic leadership with strong relational skills with both children and adults.
Administrative and communication skills to manage a multi-faceted program in a large church setting.
Commitment to the success of every ministry of the church.
Minimum of five years relevant experience working directly with children.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including online.
Ability to pass a background check screening.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree or Christian Education Certification, Childhood Teaching Certification, or equivalent experience.
Strategic planning skills that involve the knowledge and foresight to bring a project to fruition and ensure long-term needs are adequately addressed by programming.
Supervisory skills that include scheduling, time sheets and performance evaluations.
Budgeting skills that include developing, managing and reporting performance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Able to speak in a public forum and to hear in conversations and large gatherings.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may occasionally have to drive.
Able to move freely through the church buildings.
Able to work on feet for up to three hours at a time, set up tables and chairs, lift up to 45 pounds, and participate in indoor and outdoor activities.
Able to participate directly in children's programming - e.g., playing games, and doing outdoor activities like biking, and swimming.
