Position Summary:

As a significant member of the DPSCD's Office of Student Transportation, the School Van Driver will provide safe and timely transportation of students to and from school and school related events. The School Van Driver must establish and maintain a positive rapport with students, follow departmental processes and procedures and exhibit a high degree of maturity and diplomacy in dealing with parents, teachers and staff. The School Van Driver will complete incident reports, accident reports, attendance reports and support the mission of the department.

Minimum Qualifications:Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.Minimum of three (3) years driving experience. Student transportation experience preferred.Must possess a valid Michigan Chauffeur license.Excellent driving record. Must meet local or state standards for driver record check.Ability to meet Department of Transportation physical examination requirements.Experience dealing with students with disabilities and their families preferred.Ability to handle challenging student behavior.Knowledge of the city of Detroit preferred.Ability to handle stressful situations with empathy and professionalism.Must possess knowledge of school bus operations and best practices.Must be able to keep all student, parent, and staff information confidential.

Essential Functions:Drive a school van according to a designated route and schedule. Participate in determining route and time changes when necessary.Operate a bus in various traffic, weather and road conditions with the safety of students as the priority.Must complete daily pre-trip inspection of the vehicle and must immediately report needed repairs.Responsible to attend classes in CPR/First Aide and other training sessions as directed by the Program Supervisor.To have a positive attitude in working with students, parents, community members, and other staff members.Supervise students while driving, maintain a safe and orderly atmosphere, and issue disciplinary measures when necessary.Communicate with supervisor, parents and school staff on student behavior.Maintain the van in a clean and orderly condition, sweep and empty trash.Refuel the van when necessary.Work collaboratively with the Office of Student Transportation routing department and make route change recommendations.Complete student ridership records for Medicaid billing purposes.Complete undesirable incident reports.Log all field trip and additional assignments for payroll purposes.Support management with special projects and requests.Prepare, review, and submit reports and other documents as required.Perform other related duties as assigned by the Program Supervisor.

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
