Job Description

The Alaska Court System (ACS) invites applications for a Deputy Magistrate 2 (salary range 16) in support of the Cordova Trial Court.

Under general supervision of the Rural Court Administrator, Area Court Administrator, and Presiding Judge this position serves as the manager of clerical operations and as a judicial officer with limited court jurisdiction.

Trial Court Case ManagementReview and process all case filings; initiate, maintain, and close criminal, civil, domestic violence and stalking, small claims, and traffic cases;Complete forms, orders, judgments, executions;Create and maintain ticklers to assure fines, restitution and community work service are completed;Enter case-related information into computer database;Maintain daily court calendar;Maintain and prepare case files for archive and microfilm retention;Act as local Americans with Disabilities (ADA) access coordinator, which involves providing assistance to persons having difficulty in hearing, observing, or participating in services offered by the court.

In-Court Clerk

Operate recording system in the courtroom;Host teleconferences for court proceedings and monitor if needed;Ensure courtroom is ready for daily use;Swear in witnesses and accept and and maintain exhibits;Prepare log notes that are legible, accurate, and informative.

Deputy Magistrate

Accept criminal complaints; issue summons and arrest warrants;Conduct bail hearings;Accept guilty and no contest pleas in misdemeanor and minor offense cases;Issue marriage licenses and perform marriages;Issue ex parte and emergency domestic violence orders;Issue ex parte and emergency stalking and sexual assault orders.

Customer Service, Facility Management, Trial Court Accounting

Assist customers at the counter or over the telephone with inquiries and forms preparation;Perform notary public duties;Certify and distribute copies of court records;Operate and maintain equipment ;Order supplies, forms, and materials;Prepare, collect and process daily mail;Issue receipts for fines, bail, restitution, and other revenue.

Work ScheduleThis position is currently scheduled to work

30 hours

per week . Hours for this position will be set in consultation with the successful applicant. This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Personal leave accrual is based on years of creditable state service. Those new to state service will accrue 4 weeks of paid leave (with cash value) over the course of their first year of service. That accrual rate will increase after 2 years of service.

Must be a citizen of the United States of America and of the State of Alaska.Must be at least 21 years of age.Must be a resident of Alaska for at least six months immediately preceding appointment as a Deputy Magistrate II to perform judicial duties.Graduation from high school or completion of a General Education Development (GED) certificate AND one year of general clerical, office, or retail work experience AND the ability to type at least 40 words per minute (net). OR Graduation from high school or completion of a General Education Development (GED) certificate AND Completion of 36 semester credit hours or 48 quarter credit hours of coursework from an accredited college AND the ability to type at least 40 words per minute (net).
