Senior Accountant

This is a hybrid role. 1 day per week in our offices in Rockville, MD.

Job Requirements:

Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Knowledge of Statutory accounting principles for Continuing Care Retirement Communities in Washington, DC, Maryland, and/or Virginia preferred.

Strong analytical and accounting skills.

Intermediate to advanced experience with MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook or similar programs.

Intermediate to advanced knowledge of major accounting software packages for general ledger - Advanced Answers on Demand (MatrixCare) preferred.

Ability to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.

Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently with minimal guidance and take ownership of work product.

Strong problem-solving, documentation, research, and data analysis skills.

Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited university.

Successful completion of the CPA Exam preferred.

Two to four years of progressively responsible experience in public accounting or the continuing care retirement communities industry preferred.

Job Summary:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing accurate and timely financial reports and statements for various entities. They will review and analyze financial information to ensure adherence to proper accounting controls and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform full accounting cycle functions including posting, balancing, and reconciling the general ledger.

Prepare work papers, financial statements, and reports for internal accounting and auditing purposes.

Analyze fluctuations and variances in financial results compared to prior periods and budgets.

Assist in providing documentation of significant variances and follow-up actions.

Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and distribute reports as required.

Collaborate with independent auditors to ensure compliance with financial reporting requirements.

Assist in preparing management reports and budget vs. actual variance analyses.

Recommend improvements to accounting systems and procedures.

Assist with expenditure coding, document preparation, and other accounting tasks.

Participate in compiling the annual budget and reviewing financial performance regularly.

Liaise with external tax auditors for Form 990 tax returns preparation.

Establish and maintain processes for monthly financial close within specified timelines.

Coordinate Bond Draw reimbursement packages monthly to financial institutions.

Review work completed by other accounting staff to ensure accuracy.

Coordinate with banks on various financial issues and enhancements to services.

Record and allocate intercompany transactions accurately.

Provide backup support for month-end duties as needed.

Document policies, procedures, and workflows for assigned areas.

Present financial information at resident and committee meetings as required.

Contribute to departmental and organizational special projects.

Maintain a professional presence and uphold organizational standards.
