The Earth Data Analysis Center (EDAC) at the University of New Mexico (UNM) has a full-time Systems/Network Analyst 1 Position opening on the Albuquerque Main Campus. EDAC was established at UNM in 1964 to transfer NASA space-based technology to the private and public sectors. As a center of expertise in geospatial technology and information technology (IT), EDAC's mission is to serve federal, state, local, and tribal government agencies, research institutes, professional societies and organizations, and the private sector by leveraging geospatial technologies and information technologies to address their needs and challenges. Under direct supervision, the System/Network Analyst 1 is responsible for providing basic professional level support in routine to moderately complex areas such as system and/or network, hardware and software tools, including installation, configuration, maintenance, and support of these systems and/or networks. This position requires fundamental knowledge of systems, security, and network analysis. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the EDAC IT infrastructure. This individual will also contribute to the development or support of EDAC’s GIS infrastructure, including virtualization and backup technologies.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThis individual will be accountable for the following systems:Linux and Windows systems that support GIS and IT infrastructureLinux and Windows systems that support research data and projectsResponsibilities for these systems include provisioning, operations and support, maintenance, and research and development to ensure continual innovationThis individual will also be responsible for maintaining a virtual environment as well as providing back-up solutions. In addition, this individual will be responsible for maintaining an Active Directory environment, performing security updates, maintaining e-mail services, maintaining database clusters, and maintaining multiple services such as license, FTP, and print services.Under direct supervision, installs new / rebuilds existing servers and configures hardware, software, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. to support GIS and IT infrastructure in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.Performs daily system monitoring to verify the integrity and availability of all computing resources; reviews system and application logs to identify any potential intrusions and security threats; verifies completion of scheduled jobs such as backups; and applies OS patches and upgrades.Performs daily backup operations, ensures all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, and tests the restoration process to ensure backups are successful.Under direct supervision, repairs and recovers from hardware or software failures, including issues such as a degraded array; coordinates and communicates with impacted constituencies.Under direct supervision, performs ongoing maintenance such as hardware upgrades and resource optimization as required; configures CPU, GPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.Contributes to and maintains existing technical documentation; manages user accounts upon request; performs file archival and purge services upon request.Under the guidance of the direct supervisor, researches and recommends innovative and automated approaches for system administration tasks; identifies approaches that leverage EDAC’s computing resources and provides economical solutions.Under the guidance of the direct supervisor, evaluates the current cyberinfrastructure capacity, gathers requirements, and collects information to make recommendations regarding network, security, computing resources, server systems, applications, and databases; participates in capacity planning, security measures, data safety and integrity initiatives, disaster recovery, and upgrade planning.Contributes input on the design and cost estimates for IT infrastructure and services; coordinates tasks for the installation/maintenance of networks or systems for small-scale and medium-scale projects.Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.Specialty licensure/certification may be required, as specified by the department.Successful candidate may be subject to a criminal background check prior to starting work.Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree; at least 6 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.Preferred QualificationsPrefer 1 to 2 years of experience, in addition to the minimum qualifications.Experience with Linux and Windows systems that support GIS and IT infrastructure, research data, and research projects.Experience with maintaining a virtual environment as well as maintaining backup systems.Experience with maintaining an Active Directory environment, performing security updates, maintaining e-mail services, maintaining database clusters, and maintaining multiple services such as license, FTP, and print services.
