The Teacher Education and Learning Sciences (TELS) in the College of Education at NC State University seeks an exceptional candidate to work in the area of English Language Arts (ELA), specifically focused on Middle School ELA preservice teacher education. This candidate would teach middle grades ELA methods courses, advise undergraduate pre-service teachers, and mentor doctoral students in the Literacy and English Language Arts (LELA) concentration. We are seeking an advanced assistant or associate professor in English Language Arts who will be an integral part of the Middle Grades English Language Art and Social Studies Education (MSL) program faculty and LELA faculty.About the Middle Grades MSL ProgramThe MSL Program offers an undergraduate degree and initial licensure in middle grades ELA and social studies with a major focus on digital literacies, inquiry-based learning, and citizenship. However, this position is focused on ELA education specifically, while offering the opportunity to collaborate with social studies education faculty.About the Literacy and English Language Arts ConcentrationAs part of the Ph.D. in the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences (TELS), the Literacy and English Language Arts (LELA) Education concentration is designed for individuals with interests in literacy, reading development, new literacies, and English Language Arts education research, scholarship, and teacher preparation. Our concentration includes a network of strong relationships with local public schools and community partners, such as pre-service teacher field placement partnerships; professional development partnerships with school districts across the state; collaboration on research with students and teachers in local public schools; and community partners. Connections to public schools and community organizations help to foster interdisciplinary field-based research projects, which provide opportunities for our doctoral candidates to work with faculty in mentored research initiatives.We are seeking an advanced Assistant or Associate Professor with significant experience and expertise in working with culturally and linguistically diverse students and whose research and teaching experience is focused on supporting students in secondary English Language Arts, with a specific focus on middle grades ELA. The person will work closely with the LELA faculty and will take primary responsibility in developing and teaching the curriculum and courses within the MSL Program and LELA doctoral concentration. This position includes the teaching expectation of two courses per semester and program coordination duties.Other ResponsibilitiesEstablish and maintain a scholarly research, publication, and grant-writing record in Literacy and English Language Arts education that is aligned with a Research University (very high research activity);Teach courses and advise undergraduate and graduate students;Contribute to program development and evaluation at the undergraduate and graduate levels;Contribute to the overall departmental and college missions through research, teaching, and engagement/outreach service;Engage in partnerships with middle schools and in research that contributes to the scholarship focused on young adults.QualificationsEarned doctorate in English Education, Literacy Education, Teacher Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or related fields with a research focus related to literacy and English language arts educationA minimum of three years of teaching experience in 6-12 schools or equivalent settingsOther Required QualificationsResearch focus in a relevant area of English language arts educationPotential to secure externally-funded projectsEstablished record of scholarly research and publication, aligned with the rank and appropriate for a Research 1 University (very high research activity)Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, innovation, and collaboration in working with schools and university colleaguesDemonstrated commitment to working with students and families from culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse backgrounds including multilingual studentsPreferred QualificationsExperience with supervising and facilitating student teaching internships and school partnershipsExperience in program design, development, and coordinationDemonstrated ability to understand and apply skills of effective digital instructional technology within courses and to train prospective teachersRequired License(s) or Certification(s)N/AValid NC Driver's License requiredCommercial Driver's License required
