ASSIGNMENT
POSITIONThere are several vacancies for School Bus Driver (Includes Benefits) available. Most positions in this class are assigned to work 6-hours a day / 10 month shift. Permanent positions are eligible for benefits. An eligibility list is being established to fill future permanent and substitute vacancies.
This classification has been designated as safety-sensitive in accordance with the drug and alcohol testing requirements adopted by the District pursuant to Board Policy 4212.42.

SUMMARY OF DUTIESUnder the direction of the Director of Transportation Services or Transportation Services Supervisor, operates a school bus in the transportation of students to and from school or field trips following designated routes in accordance with time schedules; assures bus is in safe operating condition by conducting daily vehicle inspections; maintains student discipline; assures the safety of students; and maintains related records.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSIncumbents are expected to follow well established rules and guidelines. Due to the nature of the work, employees in this class receive limited supervision. However, incumbents report to the Supervisor who is readily available via two-way radio and can provide direction on more serious situations which may arise such as traffic accidents/injuries. While the driving aspects are routine, situations arise regularly which require incumbents to exercise independent judgment such as in the disciplining of students and in evaluating traffic conditions. Success in this class is based on the incumbent's ability to: drive a large vehicle safely concentrating on road conditions while maintaining discipline of a large number of students on the bus; follow written and oral instructions; and perform required duties in accordance with strict time schedules.
The class of School Bus Driver is distinguished from the class of Bus Driver Instructor in that while the latter may perform some of the duties of a School Bus Driver, the latter's primary responsibility is to provide on-going training of the trainees and the School Bus Drivers in order to qualify and maintain their licenses and certificates.

A good driving record is required and applicants must provide the District with a copy of their current DMV Official Driver Record at the time of application.
Incumbents must be able to be insured, and continue to be insurable, by the District's liability insurance carrier.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Employees in this classification work primarily outside, in varying temperatures in inclement weather, in contact with gas, exhaust, and cleaning solvent fumes, dust, odors, moving vehicles, exposure to minor and severe contagious illnesses/diseases (colds, flu, tuberculosis, measles, mumps, chicken pox, hepatitis), in the absence of immediate supervision, and in direct contact with students, the public, and District personnel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees in the classification sit for extended amounts of time, lift and carry up to 50 lbs., pull, climb stairs, stoop/bend, use fingers repetitively, twist or apply pressure with wrists or hands repetitively, use both hands and/or legs simultaneously, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, speak clearly, hear, have depth perception, have color vision/distinguish shades, see small details and for long distances, operate mobile motorized equipment, and drive a vehicle.

RUSD will only accept evaluations from agencies listed within the document.ADVANCED SALARY STEP PLACEMENTNew employees are normally placed at Step A of the appropriate salary range for this classification. If the hiring authority requests advanced salary step placement to the Personnel Director, the new employee's eligibility will be determined in accordance with Personnel Commission Rule and Regulation 17.2.1. The Personnel Commission shall have final approval on any advanced salary step placement requests. Contact the Personnel Commission office for further information if you are hired.

APPOINTMENTCandidates who pass all hurdles of the testing process will be placed on an eligibility list in rank order based on final scores including any veteran's / seniority credit. The top three ranks of eligibles who are ready and willing to accept the position shall be referred to the hiring administrator for interview.
The eligibility list will be established for six (6) months.
All new employees are subject to passing a physical examination, tuberculosis test, background review and must provide satisfactory evidence of authorization to work in the United States.
Employment start date is contingent upon fingerprinting and criminal background clearance.In accordance with Education Code 45301, an employee appointed to this class must serve a probationary period of six (6) months or 130 working days of paid service, whichever is longer. No employee shall attain permanent status in the classified service until s/he has completed a probationary period in a class. An employee may be released at any time during the probationary period.
PROCESSING FEE:New employees will be charged a processing fee (approximately $64) for the cost of fingerprinting. This fee must be paid at the time of processing appointment, with a MONEY ORDER ONLY, payable to RUSD.
VETERANS CREDITFor entry level classes, veterans with thirty (30) days or more of active service (during a time of war or national emergency) who obtain a passing score shall be allowed an additional credit of five (5) points and disabled veterans receive ten (10) additional points. Entry-level positions are defined as all positions within the classified service when the
eligible is first employed
by the District, except for positions designated management or senior management. Veterans must supply a copy of their Form DD214 along with their application in order to receive such credit.
Veterans credit can only be applied upon available upon initial hire.
VACATIONEmployees with one (1) to three (3) years of service earn vacation at the rate of one (1) day for each month in paid status for a maximum of 12 vacation days per year. The number of vacation days earned progressively increases as provided in the RUSD-CSEA Agreement, Appendix A. Part-time employees earn vacation benefits prorated on the average number of hours worked per day per month in their regular assignments.
HOLIDAYSFor twelve month employees, fifteen(15) paid holidays are earned each year and one (1) floating holiday per calendar year.
SICK LEAVEOne (1) day of sick leave is earned for each full month of service which may be accumulated from year to year. Employees who transfer from another California school district, including a county superintendent of schools office, who have accrued sick leave may transfer it to this District.
HEALTH INSURANCEEmployees whose regular work assignment is thirty (30) hours or more per week are eligible to participate in the District's insurance program which consists of medical, dental, vision, life insurance and income protection.
The District provides eligible employees major medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.

EDUCATIONAL STIPENDBeginning the 2022-23 school year, all employees who have an earned Bachelor's or Master's degree beyond the requirements for their position are eligible for a stipend.Once a transcript is submitted and verified by the Human Resources division, unit members will be eligible for one stipend based on the highest degree earned. Stipend amounts will be divided into 10 monthly payments, September - June. The stipend amount will be prorated for any midyear degrees conferred in the month the transcript was submitted to and verified by the Human resources Department.
Bachelor's degree are eligible for an annual $500 stipend.Bachelor's and Master's degree are eligible for an annual $1000 stipendRETIREMENTEmployees who work 20 hours or more per week will be enrolled in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
