Under the direction of the Regional Legal Counsel, the Assistant Regional Legal Counsel represents the Department and coordinates legal activities for the Southern Region including Judicial Circuits Eleven and Sixteen.Responsibilities:

Represent the Department in legal matters in mental health circuit court proceedings, adult and juvenile incompetency commitment hearings, and in substance abuse program licensing matters.Act as Agency Attorney in formal and informal internal matters and before the Division of Administrative Hearings, and other administrative tribunals.Draft, proof and sign legal pleadings filed with administrative forums and circuit civil, county and criminal divisions. Legal pleadings include, but are not limited to, petitions, pleadings, motions, discovery requests, agreements, affidavits, certificates of service, notices and any other required reports, records, or documentation.Conduct highly technical, varied, and complex legal research primarily pertaining to the DCF Southern Region’s programs.Act as Region liaison with courts, state attorneys, public defenders, legal services programs and other entities within the legal community.Conduct and attend depositions as required; respond to subpoenas on behalf of the Department.Prepare written legal opinions involving federal and state statute interpretations, administrative rules, and court decisions, consistent with agency policy and direction from the Department’s Office of General Counsel.Supervise Regional legal staff that may include, but not be limited to, paralegal specialists, secretarial and administrative staff, support staff and legal interns.Perform other duties as necessary and assigned for the best interest of the Department.Qualifications:
