Controls Engineer

The Controls Engineer will be responsible for owning all software aspects of various machinery and tooling projects. These may vary from small R&D tasks to large scale production equipment. The Controls Engineer will work with customers to define the needs and specifications for their projects. These projects will generally be interdisciplinary, and the engineer will work with other members of the team to deliver an integrated and functional solution.

Responsibilities:

Develop, test, install, and integrate software solutions related to custom automation, machine vision, feedback systems, robotics, and data collection and management.

Program and integrate various off-the-shelf components (cameras, robots, sensors, motors, etc.).

Meet project budgets and schedules.

Coordinate progress and roadblocks with Project Managers.

Support and assist the production team during debug, commissioning, and install of equipment.

Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams on mechanical and electrical integration.

Coordinate with and manage external suppliers.

Coordinate with customers to refine requirements and align on project requirements.

Coordinate with customers on functional and user interface requirements (HMIs, MES integration, etc.).

Support equipment deployment and service at customer sites. Some travel is expected in this role (~5%).

Minimum Required Experience:

1+ years of experience developing software for PLCs or similar devices. College experience acceptable.

Knowledge of one or more programming languages (VB.NET or C preferred).

Basic knowledge of HMI/GUI, and PLC development environment software.

Knowledge of .NET and COM/ActiveX environments and SDK/APIs implementation.

Understanding of various communication protocols (RS232, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, CAN bus).

Preferred Experience:

BS or higher degree in engineering field.

1+ years in a controls design role, in an industrial automation and/or machine building environment.

Knowledge and experience programming and tuning servo motors, stepper motors, and VFD controlled motors.

Experience with Vision Systems (Cognex, Keyence, etc.).

Experience with field devices (sensors and actuators), digital and analog I/O signals processing and interfacing techniques.

Direct experience troubleshooting automated equipment.

Ability to specify vision equipment, including lens, lighting, filters, and sensors.

Ability to read electrical and pneumatic schematics.

Ability to read mechanical drawings.
