Applications Design EngineerOur Client is seeking an Applications Design Engineer to help develop novel new products that harvest energy from rooftops and deliver ultimate customer satisfaction. This exciting role will report to the Director of Product Development & Engineering, and work within a cross-functional team to develop products. The ideal candidate must have a passion for engineering products that will change the world’s energy infrastructure and thrive working in a fast-paced environment. This person will be responsible for designing the staging, workflow, and tools to best install new products including solar roofing, electrical interconnection, and energy storage. They will benchmark existing and competing products and measure improvements of new concepts.
What will you be doing?
Testing prototypes and providing design input and product evaluations.
Designing installation workflow to improve installation efficiency and maximize job quality.
Translating customer needs and requirements into product design specifications.
Acting as an expert resource on field applications and engineering and representing our company in the field on pilots and training on new products.
Thinking of creative new designs, features, and tools for product improvement and report feedback from contracting partners to inform product design engineering and product management.
Defining and executing process improvement to create, characterize, and optimize roof and electrical BOS assembly processes.
Generating documentation for change controls and engineering qualification protocols to support process changes.
Setting and achieving key KPIs such as Quality, Safety, Rate, Downtime, and number of processes; analyze data, monitor trends, and drive projects to meet those targets.
Driving a culture of continuous improvement by characterizing and optimizing existing processes and reducing waste.
Working cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Design Engineering, Product Management, Certification & Reliability, Electrical Engineering, Operations Training, Technical Publications, etc.
Designing workflow to maintain safety and create an ergonomic installation process that satisfies the installer.
Performing supporting activities for Engineering and Manufacturing including 5S and Lean manufacturing activities, material handling improvements, installation layout/line configuration, installer training and safety procedures.
Monitoring project schedules, timelines and deliverables using standard project management tools and engineering systems.
Building test fixtures and roofs to perform applications testing.
What do we require from you?
BS in Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent roofing and solar experience.
5+ years’ experience in roofing and/or solar construction.
Experience with construction, roofing, solar installation, electrical interconnection of solar systems.
Hands-on skills with hardware, tools, instruments, general electromechanical systems, measurement techniques.
Experience with ergonomic process design, part variation control, and human factors effects on product.
Data collection and analysis experience.
Strong ability to work and communicate effectively with team and peers within a product development engineering organization. This includes excellent communication skills: written, verbal, and email.
Strong Microsoft Office or Google Suite experience.
Strong problem solving skills and an aptitude for learning systems quickly.
Exceptional capacity for managing simultaneous activities and challenges.
Creative capacity for developing new ways to do things better, cheaper, faster.
Additional Qualifications (not required)
NABCEP or other certifications, preferred but not required.
State of CA electrical license holder preferred but not required.
CAD design with Solidworks or equivalent.
