The Behavior Management Specialist (BMS) position is located at

Eastern State Hospital

in Medical Lake, WA. The mission and vision of

Eastern State Hospital

is to provide specialized and intensive mental health treatment. The Behavior Management Team (BMT) provides data collection and communication to treatment teams regarding inpatient care as part of an interdisciplinary team.Opportunities performed on-site at this work location at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary. Evening and Night shifts include a shift differential in addition to the standard compensation rate.Some of what you'll do:Provide individualized behavioral support to patients who consistently engage in assaultive behaviors, working closely with ward staff and treatment team members to develop specific behavioral strategies.Assess for etiology of aggression and environmental factors contributing to aggression.Provide therapeutic milieu support on acute wards to identify early signs of crisis and offer early intervention.Utilize various communication intervention techniques to reduce the potential of deploying restraints or seclusion techniques.Promote recovery principles in all interactions and clinical interventions with patients.Participate in treatment team meetings and case consultations to coordinate BMT services for patients engaging in incidents of assault.Mentor and coach ward staff on effective de-escalation strategies, therapeutic engagement, and milieu management.What we are looking for:Experience in intervening and de-escalating crisis/dangerous situations.Working knowledge of therapeutic communication, incident command, seclusion/restraint principles, and debriefing.Knowledge of mental illness and recovery principles.Knowledge of behavior management principles.In-depth knowledge of group behavior and dynamics.Demonstrates the principles of universal precautions and infection control practices.Ability to work with difficult or angry patients in a therapeutic, non-threatening manner.Effective communication skills with management, peers, patients, and the public.Who should apply?Professionals with six years of experience working with clients in psychiatric or mental health settings OR an equivalent combination of experience and/or college-level education, preferably involving a major study in sociology or other social science.Questions about this opportunity?
