Senior Accountant
to join our growing team in
Washington, DC . CAAS supports the accounting function for a variety of diverse clients, primarily in the nonprofit sector. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Senior Accountant from the public accounting industry or Assistant Controller from the private sector who is looking for challenging, highly rewarding work. The ideal candidate has demonstrated expertise with the monthly close process, preparation of financial statements, will possess a high aptitude for learning new systems and processes, and is comfortable interfacing with organizational leadership and Boards of Directors. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a deadline driven, fast-paced environment.
Job Summary
The CAAS Senior Accountant leads the monthly close process, oversees the staff accountant on the engagement, and is primarily responsible for preparing financial statements, and training and reviewing work of the staff accountant. The Senior Accountant is the primary contact for the client. The work of the Senior Accountant is performed in the Marcum offices but can involve travel to client sites.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for the month-end and year-end closing process
Main point of contact with clients, responding to day-to-day requests and questions regarding monthly close and other operational items
Responsible for preparing monthly financial statements, including balance sheet, income statement, statement of functional expenses, and analysis on changes in financial position and budget variances
Trains, coaches and mentors Staff Accountants.
Reviews and supervises Staff Accountant’s monthly work including but not limited to journal entry preparation, monthly account reconciliation, accounts payable and accounts receivable activity
Prepares/reviews reconciliations for significant balance sheet accounts and various other general ledger accounts, as needed
Prepares/reviews day-to-day and month end close entries including payroll, fringe, indirect, investment allocations, and grant allocations
Integral part of the annual audit, communicating with auditors, preparing schedules, financial statements and notes, responding to auditors inquiries and follow up
Prepares support for the annual 990 tax filing, preparing schedules and support and responding to any inquiries
Develops and maintains a deep understanding of client’s accounting operations and procedures
Obtains an advanced working knowledge of the client’s accounting software packages.
Responsible for recommending and enforcing the internal controls, policies, and procedures, established by the client.
Assist in preparation of our clients’ tax forms and year end preparation of their 1099’s.
Other duties may include, but are not limited to: budget preparation, review, modification, Grant reporting to private/federal funders, Drafting of Policies and Procedures, review and payment of client payables in third party software
Minimum Qualifications
(Education, experience, certifications)
A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration or other related education
CPA or CPA Candidate
2-4+ years of accounting experience in Public Accounting or at a Non-Profit organization preferred.
Demonstrated expertise of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
Proficient with various accounting software programs including but not limited to QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Solomon, and Great Plains.
Proficient in the use of Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
Strong problem solving and analytical skills and proactive initiative.
Professionalism and relationship building skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Strong time management skills and the ability to work in a matrixed environment
Ability to keep up to date with industry trends and technology developments

Compensation Range
Salary: $85,000.00 - $100,000.00
