Senior/Principal Scientist, Biochemistry & Biophysics

at Treeline BiosciencesWatertown, Massachusetts, United StatesAbout TreelineTreeline Biosciences is an innovative biotechnology company, founded by an experienced team of biopharmaceutical scientists and executives, committed to developing new medicines against difficult to drug targets in cancer and other life-threatening diseases. We are pursuing a uniquely integrated approach that applies modern and emerging tools in genomics, lead discovery, medicinal chemistry, and computation to reduce the time and risks of drug discovery.About the RoleWe are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and highly motivated Biochemist & Biophysicist to join our Watertown team to deliver high-quality results and drive small molecule drug discovery. The successful candidate will have a critical role in supporting Treeline’s drug discovery programs by collaborating closely with the multi-disciplinary Lead Discovery organization across biophysics, biochemistry, structural biology, and protein production, as well as the broader organization including biology, computational chemistry, and medicinal chemistry. Specifically, you will propose, design, and implement new biophysical assays (e.g., SPR, MST, DSF, NMR) to characterize protein-small molecule and protein-protein interactions. In addition, the ideal candidate will provide expert interpretation of biophysical and/or biochemical results and use data analysis and visualization tools to integrate data with the broader set of data generated at Treeline to drive program decisions.ResponsibilitiesIn collaboration with cross-functional project teams, propose, design, and implement biophysical or biochemical assays/experiments for compound interaction analysis in support of hit ID, hit to lead, and lead optimization activities.Efficiently utilize a suite of biophysical techniques to advance drug discovery: primarily SPR but also including DSF, MS, DLS, and MST.Employ biophysical methods to mechanistically deconvolute the molecular mechanism of action of small molecule hits.Effectively analyze, interpret, and communicate biophysical data as a subject matter expert and biophysics representative on project teams. In collaboration with chemistry, biology, lead discovery, and medicine design, characterize and establish SAR to rapidly drive the hit-to-lead process.Propose and evaluate new approaches and technologies.Provide biophysics leadership to project teams.Required QualificationsPhD in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Biology or related discipline with 2-3 years of relevant postdoctoral training.5+ years of experience in biotech/pharma industry with a track record of hit-finding, hit-to-lead, and lead optimization to delivering small molecule development candidates.Previous experience in small molecule drug discovery, specifically biophysical assay development and characterization of small molecule inhibitors and protein-ligand binding interactions.Strong knowledge of biophysical methods and theory with proven hands-on expertise applying biophysics for interaction analysis. Expertise with application of SPR for small drug discovery. Expertise with MST, DSF, MS, or NMR are a plus.Experience with integrated application of a broad array of biophysical or biochemical methods for drug discovery is a plus.Attention to detail and good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.Strong written and oral communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on multidisciplinary teams.Preferred QualificationsAbility to lead in a matrix environment, and for example, act as point of contact on behalf of Lead Discovery within the broader project team.Experience with fragment-based lead discovery, covalent lead discovery, and DEL are a plus.Strong hands-on biochemistry experience or expertise in enzymology.Working knowledge of adjacent disciplines (biochemistry, structural biology, protein purification, biology, chemistry).Experience in working with challenging proteins.Experience working with CROs.
