The Mission of the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) is to prepare students to become technically competent, culturally sensitive, professional and compassionate physicians who are lifelong learners and will serve society by providing comprehensive, patient-centered healthcare with the distinctive osteopathic philosophy.The role of the faculty in the Department of Surgery is to train students according to the mission of COMP and COMP-Northwest. This is accomplished through excellence in curriculum, translational research, service and osteopathic clinical practice. The faculty is expected to mentor and be a role model for students.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Able and willing to practice the full scope of Surgery as defined by current College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific/WesternU Medical Center policies and practices.Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills.Required Qualifications

EDUCATION:

DO or MD degree. Residency trained and Board Certified in Surgery.EXPERIENCE:

2-3 years’ experience in Surgery.LICENSURE:

Unrestricted Oregon State license (or eligible to obtain OR state licensure). Unrestricted Drug Enforcement Agency certificate.Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to individuals who possess prior medical student teaching experience, bilingual capabilities, formal training or coursework in medical education, and/or clinical research experience.Key Responsibilities

Teaching Responsibilities:Teach clinical skills, values and attitudes identified by the WesternU, COMP-Northwest Department of Surgery as necessary and appropriate to be competent and compassionate osteopathic primary care physicians. Teaching responsibilities may include but are not limited to classroom teaching and precepting WesternU students of all programs on clinical rotations as well as assignments deemed appropriate by the Chair of the Department of Surgery and the Dean of COMP and COMP-Northwest. Perform administrative duties associated with the responsibilities of the position.Full participation as clinical faculty in the OMS I-IV curriculum and other clinically oriented courses, activities, or programs. Serve as lead, co-lead or faculty in other courses or curricular blocks as assigned.Assist with board preparation and COMAT failures.Attend monthly COMP/COMP-Northwest Department of Surgery meetings and other meetings, workshops, study sessions, etc. as assigned. Attend faculty development seminars and academic boot camp.Serve on faculty committees as elected or assigned. Participate in CMR activities. Serve as a faculty advisor to students in years 1 – 4 as assigned or requested by the student. Provide mentorship to students interested in pursuing surgical specialty, participate/lead surgery interest groups.Proactively seek out and participate in other professional development and CME opportunities.Research and Grant Development

Help to develop and participate in research projects entered into by WesternU as agreed upon by the COMP-Northwest Department of Surgery. Participate in development and implementation of grants in Surgery or other state, federal or private grants awarded to WesternU, COMP-Northwest.Participate in a minimum of 6 student interviews for the admissions interview process.Work Schedule
