The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) is the specialized international health agency for the Americas.It works with countries throughout the region to improve and protect people's health. PAHO engages in technical cooperation with its member countries to fight communicable and noncommunicable diseases and their causes, to strengthen health systems, and to respond to emergencies and disasters. From its Washington, D.C. headquarters, 27 country offices and three specialized centers in the region, PAHO promotes evidence-based decision-making to improve and promote health as a driver of sustainable development.PAHO is searching for an expert to serve as:Advisor, Publication ServicesThe incumbent manages and oversees the work of the Publications Team and is expected to provide leadership, policy guidance, strategic advice, and support in scientific and technical publishing activities, as well as to develop internal and external collaborative networks. The incumbent is responsible for developing initiatives to position PAHO as a reliable, authoritative source on the publishing of evidence-based scientific and technical health information and knowledge. He/she leads PUB in the writing and production of PAHO corporate publications including annual reports, in multiple formats, and supervises the content development of advocacy products aimed at PAHO diverse audiences, in coordination with technical units. The incumbent is responsible for proposing and implementing quality assurance mechanisms for PAHO publications. He/she expands and engages PAHO audiences through marketing dissemination of PAHO publications. The incumbent is responsible for increasing the internal publishing and editorial capacity, by developing and updating editorial guides, including the PAHO style guide, and providing training and courses, as appropriate. He/she oversees intellectual propriety of PAHO publications, including licensing, copyright issues and the implementation of the Open Access policy. The incumbent must exercise a high degree of leadership, independent judgment, initiative, and decision-making capability e within the team and with colleagues both internal and external to the Organization.The successful candidate will have:A bachelor’s and master’s degree in communications, journalism, a health-related science, international studies, or related field from a recognized university.Nine years of combined national and international experience in publications management, scientific communication, and other related publishing activities.Expert knowledge of English or Spanish and advanced knowledge of the other language.Salary range: US$131,608.85 to US$140,198.85, net of income taxes. Conditions of employment in the Organization conform to those established by the International Civil Service Commission for employment in the United Nations and its specialized agencies.
