Position SummaryThe Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Director
develops, implements, and monitors company environmental health and safety (EH&S) programs and policies
to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations. S/he maintains safety equipment inventory, performs periodic safety inspections, and monitors hazardous waste removal. Interacting with a variety of departments, conducting training in emergency response and hazardous material handling. Monitors environmental compliance and maintains liaison with appropriate regulatory agencies. Alerts leadership team with corrective action where environmental health and safety hazards exist.Duties/ResponsibilitiesProvide EHS guidance to the Company to drive a Commitment to Zero safety culture and implement and lead Opta’s ISO 14001 Management SystemChairs Safety Committee meetings together with other divisions and provides topic guidance for Safety Toolbox meetings, including but not limited to Safety AlertsNetwork with other EH&S professionals, trade and professional associations, as well as businesses, sites, and other functions on tools and approaches for EH&S compliance and be effective in shaping policy, best practices, and standards for the sitesDirect EH&S activities, including planning, implementing, and managing technical performance to ensure quality and financial objectives are attainedDirects EH&S projects, including project design and schedule, as well as M&A process to meet objectivesDirects the development of short and long-term EH&S objectives and recommends goalsDirects activities related to EH&S programs and ensures Company compliance with any applicable regulations, reviews requirements regarding safety aspectsDevelop internal audit plans, review performance, and feedback gaps to management to drive continual EH&S improvementDevelops appropriate electronic and hard copy reports and records through a specific ERP system. S/he may develop new or revise existing electronic or hard copy systems and make internal and external presentationsCollaborates with senior and executive management to develop and implement current and annual technical, schedule, quality, and financial objectives for the EH&S program(s) to ensure strategic business objectives are met. May also participate in the development of annual and long-term objectives for the organizationRepresents the organization as a primary spokesperson with line management, program managers, technical staff, and outside representativesPromotes workplace safety and assists in the development, maintenance, and management of EH&S programs at the facilities, including proactive incident and illness prevention, respiratory protection, contractor safety, and hazardous chemical managementFoster and manage Safety Committee activities, agenda preparation, reports, follow-ups, incentive programsSupport Opta in fostering and managing EH&S activities and actions in observance of the best practices in ESGAssess all different safety programs, conduct training and manage documentation, including but not limited to: STOP observation, Area Safety Representatives (ASR), Lockout/Tagout, Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP), Evacuation Procedures, PPE, Pedestrian Safety, Ergonomics, Heat Stress, etc.Compiles, analyzes, maintains, and interprets safety statistical data related both to Incidents Frequency (LTF/FR1) as well as to exposure factors concerning occupational illnesses and non-lost time accidents, first-aid incidents, near miss records, and conducts root cause analysis for accident reports and evaluate injury case studiesMaintains and ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state rules, regulations, and code standards in both the US and Canada; interprets regulations on relevant issues to provide practical guidance, support, and training aimed at maintaining and developing best practices.Directs the assessment for physical/chemical/laboratory safety and environmental protection functions; reviews with appropriate management and staff, as well as Safety Committees, to implement and execute programs for the prevention and control of EH&S risks, including, but not limited to, prevention of injuries, industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, laboratory compliance, hazardous waste, and EPA/OSHA compliance, records, and permitsEstablishes and monitors key performance metrics, measuring performance progress and evaluating EH&S program effectivenessAdvises leaders on performance improvements; leads improvement initiatives; directs departments on specific regulatory safety and environmental issues by education and training programs on the requirements from federal, state, and local rules and protocolsActs as the primary liaison for NAM MS with government agencies on all environmental, occupational, and life safety matters.
