Tort and Condemnation Section

of the

California Attorney General’s Office , you will handle a variety of cases involving government tort liability – including civil rights, personal injury, premises liability, excessive force, medical malpractice, due process, eminent domain, inverse condemnation, and mass torts arising out of floods and fires. Our section seeks motivated attorneys with

up to 5 years of experience

to develop and hone their litigation and trial skills.As a Tort and Condemnation Section Deputy, your duties will include:Engaging in all aspects of civil litigation, from inception through trial, settlement, or appealFirst- and second-chairing jury trialsAppearing in state and federal court at all levelsHandling an extensive variety of tort matters that are often high profile and involve issues of first impressionInvestigating facts and analyzing documentary evidenceCommunicating and coordinating directly with clients about case status and strategyWorking collaboratively with team membersRepresenting the Attorney General’s Office with the highest ethical and professional standardsSome perks of working for the Department of Justice:We’re driven by client service, not billable hoursOur attorneys run their own cases from start to finish, including trial and appeal; they don’t get piecemeal assignmentsWe go to trial – our attorneys get first- and second-chair trial experienceWe have a strong team that provides mentoring and supportWe have good benefits, including a pension, generous leave time (that you can actually use), and good healthcareWe allow remote work (with in-office time required only as needed)We are hiring in all of our offices – Fresno, Sacramento, Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

DAGs are welcome to telework , with in-office attendance required for periodic meetings, and travel may be necessary for trials, court appearances, witness interviews, depositions, and operationally as needed. The DAG salary range is $7,737 – 11,173 per month.The application deadline for the DAG positions is June 20, 2024, and interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis.

All applicants must be on the state eligibility list for these positions, which means you must take the DAG Exam, an online questionnaire that asks about your experience handling various litigation-related tasks.
