The Mechanical Engineering Manager 2 is responsible for providing engineering leadership and technical direction to a Marine Systems integrated engineering team which consists of a diverse staff of approximately 12 Mechanical and Systems Engineers. The engineering team is located in Sunnyvale, CA with some members of the team supporting from other locations; therefore, there are additional options for working out of our Annapolis, MD, Ocean Springs, MS, or Charlottesville, VA offices.

In this role, the manager will be a program Team Lead with accountability for requirements and interface development, verification, mechanical design and development, engineering support of testing, qualification, and delivery of a complex hardware product for the U.S. Navy. The position responsibilities also include management of time keeping, performance reviews, staffing and resource planning, training, and team engagement. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated aptitude in areas of requirements and interface management and verification, design of fabricated and machined components, design of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic subsystems, CAD modeling / drawing review, and successful execution of technical projects to cost and schedule targets.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Provide project and technical oversight of design activities performed by the group

Prepare cost estimates, provide proposal inputs, and review proposal content for both internal and external customers

Increasing machinery design engineering competencies through employee development and strategic hiring

Balancing employee needs with business goals

Provide ownership of and direction to the design processes used in the group

Basic understanding of the Design, Manufacturing and Test Integration process

Support department initiatives, forecasting and recruiting, technology roadmap creation, and champion continuous process improvements

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or STEM Degree with 9 years of engineering experience; OR a master's degree in mechanical engineering or STEM Degree with 7 years of engineering experience; OR a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or STEM Degree with 5 years of engineering experience.

US Citizenship, with the ability to receive DoD Secret clearance (or higher).

Strong fundamentals in Design Engineering.

Experience in systems engineering.

Experience in functional/people management.

Production issues resolution experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in mechanical engineering and 7 years of engineering or technical management experience

Experience as a Technical Lead, Project Manager, or other demonstrated leadership role related to program execution

Understanding of launcher system principles of operation and design

Experience with requirements and interface management and verification

Experience with design of fabricated and machined components, or design of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic subsystems

Experience with requirements and interface management and verification or Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience

Technical project management experience with proven successful execution of technical projects to cost and schedule targets

Understanding and knowledge of Agile (SCRUM) techniques and activities.

Knowledge of Design Engineering processes, procedures and work instructions required to support both management and engineering tasks

Experience with proposals and Earned Value

Salary Range:

$119,300 - $207,100

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
