SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITY:

The All-City Percussion Ensemble Director leads the Percussion Ensemble by coordinating the preparations, rehearsals, and activities of the All-City Band’s Percussion Section. The director prepares and directs the ensemble for independent performance and competition (Indoor season), as well as for performances integrated within the All-City Marching Program.

This position could be just for marching season (July to November) if needed but could also include the Winter Drumline season as well (November to April) if agreed by percussion director and band director.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Lead and teach members program material in sectionals and full ensemble rehearsals.

Work closely with all staff members to develop a sound program, including musical arrangement and visual elements as needed.

Design programs that effectively complement and enhance the visual and musical program.

Evaluate members' abilities and assign percussion ensemble equipment accordingly.

Attend all rehearsals and performances, and instruct members in fundamental and advanced snare, mallet, and percussive keyboard technique.

Marching band rehearsals are normally Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00-6:00 PM during the marching band season, although there will be occasional other rehearsals on other days.

The Indoor winter season rehearsal schedule will be set by the instructor (suggested 2 times a week) and rehearsals typically are Mondays and Wednesdays.

Arrange and develop percussion warm-up and technique exercises.

Coordinate the percussion rehearsal schedule with the other staff directors.

Ensure the highest possible level of performance from the percussion members through proper warm-up processes, effective preparation, and attention to individual members.

Recruit potential percussion members while retaining current members.

Ensure that the percussion ensemble is properly equipped for rehearsals and performances.

Maintain a cooperative working relationship with the Athletic Director, Band Director, other Percussion staff, Band Staff, Band Members, School Administration, Booster Organization, and Custodial Staff.

Manage all equipment necessary for rehearsals and performances including maintenance, repair, and acquisition recommendations.

Participate in spring semester program planning as needed.

Recommend new property purchases within the budget allocations.

Other related duties as assigned by the Head Band Director in preparing students for competitions and public appearances.

On a regular day, as the Percussion Ensemble Assistant Director, you might:

Lead teach warm-up and technique exercises.

Lead teach a sectional rehearsal.

Co-teach a full ensemble rehearsal.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma.

Background in marching band percussive performance.

Experience in composing, choreographing routines for percussive units preferred, but not required.

Must attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances.

Must pass district background check.
