Rose Community Foundation seeks a Director of Donor Funds and Legacy Giving to oversee, steward and grow Rose Community Foundation’s portfolio of donor-advised funds and legacy donors and collaborate with the philanthropic services team to optimize and enhance gift acceptance, donor relationships, engagement opportunities, stewardship and learning opportunities. This position is a member of the Philanthropic Services department and reports to the Vice President of Philanthropic Services.

Personal Characteristics

The ideal candidate is a relationship builder with strong organizational skills. They can successfully steward and develop different constituencies of Rose Community Foundation: prospective donors, existing fundholders, legacy donors and professional advisors. The candidate understands the nuances and trends of philanthropic giving and the reasons underlying donors’ philanthropic intent. They are an excellent listener and at the same time, have an ability to facilitate strategic philanthropy conversations with donors and – when appropriate – multiple generations of a donor-advised fundholder family. The candidate enjoys connecting with external audiences. They can work both collaboratively and individually as an integral part of the philanthropic services team.

Duties and Responsibilities

Direct the Foundation’s donor-advised fund program

Lead the donor-advised fund team to develop donor engagement programs and resources; enhance stewardship, advising and reporting practices; and create synergies between the Foundation’s community impact and donor grantmaking teams

Ensure high stewardship and advising standards for all donor-advised funds

Ensure accurate and up-to-date documentation, including succession plans, for all funds

Individually steward a large portfolio of donor-advised fundholders providing research, advising, and meeting facilitation

Direct the Foundation’s legacy giving program

Build and maintain relationships with all Rose Community Legacy Circle members and ensure ongoing legacy donor stewardship

Identify and solicit new legacy commitments for the Foundation, with an emphasis on legacy gifts in support of the Foundation’s unrestricted endowment

Work with legacy donors to support gift planning and gift structure, and steward and facilitate the Foundation’s receipt of matured bequests

Ensure accurate and up-to-date records and documentation for all legacy gifts

New fund and donor cultivation

Collaborate with Foundation colleagues to identify and cultivate prospects for annual fundraising, donor-advised funds and legacy gifts, broadening and diversifying the people and communities engaging with the Foundation

Oversee donor-advised fund and legacy gift pipeline development and donor moves management strategies

Lead professional advisor relations as a source of new donor, fundholder and legacy referrals

Other major responsibilities

Collaborate across departments to engage donors in pooled fund, impact investing and aligned funding opportunities to enhance and grow the Foundation’s grantmaking into the community

Collaborate across departments to develop and maintain data-informed practices and internal and external reporting

Work with the Vice President of Philanthropic Services and the Chief Financial Officer to solicit, review, structure and accept gifts of complex assets, including due diligence, consultation with legal counsel, and review by the Foundation’s Gift Acceptance Committee

Maintain awareness of legislation, regulation and tax-code changes affecting philanthropy in general and donor-advised funds and planned giving in particular; and keep the Foundation’s leadership team informed of changes in an effort to enhance philanthropic services strategies and ability to accept gifts

Provide input and ideas for strategic communications and thought leadership that further goals to attract, educate, activate and engage donors

Supervision

The Director of Donor Funds and Legacy Giving currently has two direct reports, supervising the Philanthropy Advisor and the Donor and Fund Services Coordinator.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

Required:

At least seven years of professional experience

Minimum five years of experience in major gifts or gift planning at a nonprofit or community foundation

Experience working with and stewarding high net worth individuals and families

Experience developing fundraising strategies, including donor prospecting, pipeline development, and donor stewardship

Understanding of community foundations and their unique role in place-based philanthropy

Strong facilitation skills, highly detail-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills

Strong professional discretion and judgement and understanding of confidentiality with respect to donors, fundholders and prospects

Proven track record of working effectively across different settings, communities and issues with people of diverse backgrounds, perspectives and cultures

An understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion principles and practices and a commitment to incorporating them into internal and external work

Skilled with technology, particularly Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams and Zoom

Valid Driver’s license and proof of COVID-19 vaccinations 1 and 2

Preferred:

Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent life and professional experience

Experience with or knowledge of donor-advised funds

Knowledge of the Jewish community in the Greater Denver region

Understanding of the nonprofit sector and community issues in the Greater Denver region

Understanding of values-based philanthropy

Experience with professional advisors in business development

Experience with or knowledge of donor prospecting software
