Job Summary

This is a limited appointment role that will end 6 months from the date of hire.Under the supervision of the Ambulatory Patient Care Supervisor I, Optometry Supervisor and the Chief of Ophthalmology of the Department of Ophthalmology at San Francisco General Hospital, and guided by policies and procedures of San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center, the Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for the efficient organization and operation of all technical functions of the practice to which he/she is assigned.

This assignment may vary from day to day, and requires an individual to be flexible and well-trained.

The primary responsibility of the Ophthalmic Technician is patient care, work-up, and preliminary testing in preparation for the Provider's examination of the patient.

The Ophthalmic/Clinical Technician:

Acts within the scope of practice an ophthalmic technician and carries out other clinical and administrative functions as directed by the Administration of the Department for any of the assigned Clinical Services, (i.e. Optometry, General Ophthalmology, Minor Procedures, Cornea, Glaucoma, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Ocular Plastics, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Proctor, and Retina/Vitreous).Monitors the clinical areas of the practice for patient and staff safety.Cleans and maintains the equipment used by the practice.Daily stocks supplies and maintains the order of each day's assigned areas.Maintains an orderly and professional appearance in all the clinic areas of the Department.Actively pursues and attends continuing educational opportunities to ensure current knowledge in the ever-evolving role of the ophthalmic technician.Stays abreast of changes in the field and seeks new skills and/or training as new, upgraded, or advancements in instrumentation develops.The Ophthalmic Technician reports directly to the Ambulatory Patient Care Supervisor or the Optometrist Supervisor. This position has no supervisory role. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. Department Description

Ophthalmology's annual patient charges reach $65,000,000 with a wRVU total of 115,000. The Department's overall operating budget is approximately $27,000,000 per year. Our Department currently ranks no. 1 in the country in NIH funding. Ophthalmology conducts its patient care, teaching, research, and public service activities currently at multiple UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veteran's Administration Medical Center (VAMC), Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG), and Benioff Children's Hospital at Mission Bay. The Department currently occupies over 60,000 of assignable square feet of space at various sites across UCSF campuses for research, academic and clinical activities. In the beginning of 2020, our Department will move the new state-of-the-art Center for Vision Neurosciences building in Mission Bay. The Department supports 30 full-time clinical faculty, 10 basic scientists, over 50 volunteer and visiting faculty. Each year, we train over 15 residents, 7 clinical fellows, and approximately 20 postdoctoral scholars and graduate students. Our staff roster reaches over 250 FTEs (including UCSF Health employees).

Required Qualifications

Graduation from college with a major in an applicable natural science; or two years of college courses in the natural sciences plus two years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;Previous experience or training in this similar positionIf not certified as COA, requirement for successful completion of JCAHPO Ophthalmic assistant certification within 6 months of hireStrong computer skills with proficiency in electronic health recordsGood understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient careKnowledge of medical instrumentation and its proper care and usageAbility to assess common safety hazards and take precautions to establish a safe work environmentExcellent verbal and written communication skillsEfficiently and accurately interviews patients and documents medical histories. Consistently works with 3-4 patients per hour.Demonstrated working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms and ocular medications.Is capable of performing optical and ultrasound biometry, fundus and external photography, HVF, OCT, and corneal topography. Interested applicants who do not currently have experience with these instruments must demonstrate proficiency after proper training.Understands and uses proper sterile technique. Utilizes proper universal precautions procedures. Understands characteristics of pediatric eye conditions and strabismus.Understands and communicates well to patients about strabismus, amblyopia, glasses and pediatric surgical procedures. Display consistent professionalism.Is energetic and communicates well to patients. Build positive relationships with supervisors and colleagues.Demonstrates flexibility in job assignment. Demonstrates initiative in accomplishing practice goals. Maintains certification. Demonstrate reliable attendance and adherence to work schedule.Must be able to stand for long periods of time and physically capable of assisting patients to and from examination rooms. Must demonstrate manual dexterity sufficient to operate ophthalmic equipment

Preferred Qualifications

Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capacity (Spanish or Cantonese) strongly preferredExperience with insurance verification, medical record data abstraction, appointment, ancillary service and/or surgical scheduling strongly preferredPrior experience in medical office environment strongly preferred

License/Certification

CPR/BLS (including patient assessment, and vital signs).COA certification

or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
