GENERAL SUMMARY:

The

Chief Development Officer (CDO)

is responsible for all aspects of the oversight and management of the organization's development and communication functions. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CDO is expected to work collaboratively with all members of the executive team to create, develop, and implement a comprehensive internal and external fundraising and marketing plan to raise a progressively increasing amount of public and private revenue to fund the maintenance and expansion of our services. The CDO will also be expected to proactively analyze internal and external business trends and construct appropriate growth plans and projections.

Under the direction of the CEO, this position will identify new opportunities to grow portfolio engagement across all fundraising channels to increase revenue, including but not limited to corporate partnerships, commercial co-ventures, special events, and individual giving. A successful candidate will manage and steward a portfolio of corporate and individual relationships and work as a team player to drive growth that achieves our mission and revenue goals. This position is accountable for significant revenue targets.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fund Development and Strategic Visioning

Foster a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fund development is executed in keeping with the organization's values, vision, and mission.

Work closely with the board of directors development and communications committees to execute the organization's strategic plan and the development team's fundraising and communication goals.

Lead Board Development Committee meetings.

Oversee and coordinate the organization's resource development strategy, including corporate, foundation, and government grants, major and planned giving programs, online strategy (e.g., digital fundraising, social media, blogs, and e-blasts), annual events, capital campaign, and peer-to-peer fundraising.

Oversee stewardship, gift accounting, and reporting functions to ensure personal and timely acknowledgment of all donor gifts, while maintaining oversight of donor database (CRM) and tracking systems.

Supervise donor databases, ensuring accurate and timely updates for revenue management and submit reports to Executive Director and Director of Finance at least monthly.

Cultivate and steward relationships, including c-suite volunteers and committees, leading to approval of grant proposals for foundation, corporate, philanthropic, and government support.

Establish and maintain a balanced mix of donor sources and fundraising programs to attract, retain, and engage donors and fundraising volunteers.

Conduct prospect evaluation, including developing individualized cultivation plans for prospects.

In partnership with Covenant House International, grow a major gifts program including identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major donors.

In partnership with Grants Administration team, grow corporation and foundation grant seeking including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements.

Build the planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequests.

Prepare and implement an annual fundraising plan, including building infrastructure and processes within the development department designed to create efficiencies and ensure responsiveness to donors and prospects.

Establish performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate the efficacy of the fund development program.

Allocate necessary resources to execute the Development related aspects of the Strategic Plan and meet program objectives.

Consistently evaluate the Development team's success and identify and/or execute corrective measures accordingly.

Maintain accountability and ensure compliance with all regulations, laws, and the code of ethics for fundraising professionals while demonstrating professional conduct.

Attend fundraising seminars and training relevant to the position, travel for donor meetings, receptions, major fundraising events, staff retreats, and staff meetings.

Partner with Covenant House International to implement federation initiatives at the local level (e.g., brand roll out, events, and corporate partnerships).

Perform other duties as assigned by Senior Leadership or requested by fellow members of the Covenant House development community.

Create and maintain existing and new corporate, civic, and individual partners hosting their volunteer engagement and corporate service days.

Advocacy and Communication

Develop and implement integrated communication and public relations strategies that reinforce the organization's brand and reputation.

Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging and communication across all channels.

Lead crisis communication efforts and provide guidance to the executive team and senior leaders during a crisis.

Manage the organization's external communications, including media relations, public relations, and social media.

Develop and manage a high-performing communications team.

Oversee the creation of communication materials, including press releases, speeches, talking points, and other written and visual content.

Build relationships with key influencers and media outlets to ensure favorable coverage and increased visibility.

Ensure that all communications comply with applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines.

Provide strategic counsel to senior leaders on communications matters and proactively identify potential issues that may impact the organization.

Make public appearances/accept speaking engagements to share information about the mission with the community.

Represent the organization as an advocate for the organization's beneficiaries and stakeholders.

Participate in community relations activities including networking state and local programs/agencies to foster collaborative working relationships.

Board Management

Attend and present at bi-monthly Board meetings and Board committee meetings.

Interface with the Board of Directors through various committees and task forces.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in marketing, Public Relations, Business Administration, Human Services, or related field preferred with sufficient ability, experience, and education to perform the assigned duties with or without accommodation.

Experience managing fundraising database; possess strong computer, communication & interpersonal skills; must have excellent organizational skills.

Ten (10) years of professional experience as a fundraiser for public and private revenue sources, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

Strong leadership skills and the ability to attract, develop, and lead a high-performing team.

Demonstrated ability to develop and implement successful communication and public relations strategies.

Proven track record of building strong relationships with media outlets, key stakeholders, and influencers.

Experience managing crisis communication efforts and providing counsel to senior leaders during a crisis.

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think strategically.

Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines related to fundraising, communications, and public relations.

Ability to organize effectively; adapt to changing conditions; exercise sound judgment in crisis situations; supervise youth and maintain order; exercise authority in an appropriate manner.

Knowledge of fundraising and grant management software and systems and Microsoft 365 suite.

Educational, Licensure and/or Certification Requirements:

Possession of a current State of Louisiana Driving License and maintenance of a clean driving record.

Ability to clear and maintain stringent federal, state, and local background clearances.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environmental Conditions: Indoors at least 75% of the time in climate-controlled buildings. Wheelchair accessibility in the Crisis Center is limited; second and third floors are accessible by elevator, as needed.

Other Relevant Conditions: Exposure to the following conditions is unlikely: blood borne pathogens; extremes in temperature; hazardous materials; fumes, poor ventilation, or other potentially dangerous atmospheric conditions; intense noise. Non-traditional hours may be involved. Some travel will be required, primarily within the New Orleans metropolitan area.
