Job Summary

The Addictions Nurse (RN) is an essential member of the health care team bringing a high level of knowledge and skills to the care of patients undergoing withdrawal from various chemical dependencies. The Addictions RN works both independently and in collaboration with medical providers and other clinic staff to deliver services that ensure patient safety and appropriate symptom management. The Addictions RN applies the nursing process to provide screenings and assessments, determine a plan of care in collaboration with medical staff, perform timely and appropriate interventions, and evaluate the outcomes of care with the goal of assisting clients with chemical dependencies to safe withdrawal from the use of alcohol and other substances. Adhere to the TCC Ch'eghwtsen' model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion and empathy.

Essential Functions

Representative Duties:

Provides comprehensive and focused nursing assessments during admissions and throughout the duration of treatment. Evaluates eligibility for admission to withdrawal management services and refers patients not meeting criteria to appropriate community resources.

Responds to patients’ medical and behavioral health emergencies during treatment. Provides supportive care throughout the withdrawal process. Performs routine screenings and point of care testing (such as blood alcohol levels or BAC, drug testing, urinalysis, and pregnancy testing). Documents all objective and subjective findings in client's medical record and communicates assessment results and patient’s status to medical staff in a timely fashion.

Conducts substance use assessments for patients utilizing the Alaska Screening Tool and Consumer Status Review and documents and communicates results appropriately.

Discharges patients from care per medical orders and facility protocol, ensuring appropriate patient education and coordination of follow up care plans.

Maintains responsibility for the regular inventory of all controlled medications per facility protocol.

Provides clinical supervision of nursing practice for all LPN and CNA staff in accordance with each team member’s licensed scope of practice. Evaluates the LPN’s conduct of CIWA and COWS assessments and provides teaching as needed.

Notifies patients and medical providers of abnormal test results, provides necessary patient education and communicates instructions or directions.

Works collaboratively with Medical and Nursing team members to accomplish Gateway to Recovery mission and goals. Will work in alignment with the general medical guidance of medical providers associated with Gateway to Recovery.

Actively participates in quality improvement initiatives at the level of their individual practice and with the care team and the organization. Makes or contributes to data driven decisions that will improve and ensure the quality of care delivered to beneficiaries of TCC Health Services.

Other Responsibilities:

Willingly accepts and performs other job-related duties as assigned or required. Tanana Chiefs Conference expects that all nurses will maintain competency to perform basic clinical nursing and patient care skills. Clinical skills competencies will be demonstrated annually per the requirements of individual roles and as needed in support of general patient care services.

Minimum Qualifications

Current RN Licensure in the State of Alaska (ADN or Diploma). Bachelor of Science degree in nursing is strongly preferred.

2 years of experience in clinical nursing practice with preference for experience in addictions medicine or substance abuse treatment.

Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) or equivalent certification is preferred. Must be able to obtain certification within two years of hire.

BLS required.

Experience serving Alaska Native/American Indian communities preferred.

Must pass background check pursuant to State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) and federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to perform physical, behavioral, and nursing assessments and identify and execute appropriate nursing interventions, prioritize tasks, and identify and resolve problems effectively and efficiently.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills for managing workflow and maintaining customer satisfaction.

Ability to work well both independently and on an interdisciplinary team, and the ability to maintain patient confidentiality.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, and understand and protect confidential information as specified in the Privacy Act, HIPAA, CFR42, and by all applicable TCC policies and procedure.

Supervision:

This position may be expected to provide clinical supervision of RN, LPN, and CNA staff and may be temporarily assigned to cover the managerial and supervisory responsibilities of other positions.

Physical demands:

Lifting patients or equipment. Exposure to a variety of infectious and communicable diseases. Standing and stooping for extended periods of time. Exposure to a variety of working environments.
