Job Summary

Job incumbent provides ambulatory nursing care. Assists Medical Provider with diagnostic procedures or treatment and provides patient education.

Adhere to the TCC Ch'eghwtsen' model of service and guiding principle which requires providing timely and effective service along with the ability to interact with others in a way that inspires trust and demonstrates respect, compassion and empathy.

Essential Functions

Representative Duties: Under the direct supervision of Physician job incumbent:

Provide assessment of all patients. Subjectively reviews patient's complaints, establishes a preliminary assessment for care, follow-through with course of action as indicated: Takes vitals, height and weight. Performs indicated screening tests and lab work-up, as requested by medical provider. Collects and cares for specimens. Fills and completes lab and x-ray requests and other forms for work-up. Document all objective and subjective findings in client's medical record.

Prepare and drape patient for exam and have necessary equipment, instruments and supplies ready for treatment. Explains procedure or treatment to patient and reinforces medical provider's instructions. Clean exam rooms and equipment after examination.

Assesses and treats minor health problems such as lacerations not requiring sutures, mild colds, immunizations, routine rheumatic fever care, etc., and patients with positive venereal disease and strep throat cultures following Nursing Standing Order Procedures and standard universal precautions.

Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the physician such as oxygen therapy, med administration, IV placement, etc.

Initiates appropriate measures in an emergency situation, identifies and interprets all serious situations and immediately decides upon the proper course of action.

Operates and monitors specialized equipment such as suction machines, EKG, blood pressure machine, etc. Ensure adequate stocks of supplies are available in treatment and exam rooms.

Reviews telephone calls, transfers and takes messages and refers to appropriate staff members.

Provides guidance and leadership to other nursing personnel.

Participates in Quality Assurance and Improvement activities.

Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Current Alaska Registered Nurse License.

Clinical experience as a licensed RN, Urgent Care, emergency room or critical care experience preferred.

Experience with handling emergencies and emergency equipment preferred.

BLS required. ACLS preferred.

Experience in delivering rural and community based services, working with Alaska Native or cross-cultural experience preferred.

Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to assess patients, set priorities, identifies and resolves problems effectively and efficiently.

Excellent communication and organizational skills for managing workflow and maintaining customer satisfaction.

Ability to do interdisciplinary teamwork, work independently and maintain patient confidentiality.

Supervision:

This position does not supervise staff.

Physical Demands

Strength ability to lift, carry, push or pull medical equipment or client. Type medical data, stoop to pick up equipment. Must have adequate vision to complete job tasks. Ability to read instructions and handle specimens. Excellent speaking and hearing to provide quality care.

Summation

Position requires the ability to adapt and communicate standards of medical care and the knowledge of disease and treatment to individual patients situations. Position requires understanding medical services and their limitations and planning for the optimal outcome under any given circumstance.
