About us

TRINITY EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH and ST. MARY'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH are two congregations of the ELCA in northwest Carroll County. We have just begun doing ministry together and are looking for ways to strengthen our impact in our communities. Trinity has a long history of quality music and is looking to revitalize that particular ministry as part of our work to share God's love.

VISION:

The Director of Music will develop a comprehensive music program that employs and strengthens the available human resources of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Taneytown (TELC) and St. Mary's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Silver Run (SML) to provide vibrant music for our worship life and works to connect the congregations to their local communities. The congregations are 15 minutes away from each other.

EXPECTATION:

The position requires an average of 20 hours each week with some fluctuation based on the seasons of the church year and special events to be scheduled. Average hours per week are provided for each area of responsibility.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

Directly supervised by the Pastor.

SALARY:

$25,000-30,000

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Worship (7 hrs/week)

Participate in the planning of worship, selecting hymns and appropriate anthems to support the liturgical calendar.

Provide organ and/or piano music for one (1) 8:45 AM worship service every Sunday morning at SML, and one (1) 10:45 AM worship service every Sunday morning at TELC (Service time(s) may change in the future).

Provide musical leadership for seasonal mid-week/special services.

Musical Ensembles (10 hrs/week for 40 weeks/year)

Convening forty (40) weeks of rehearsals and directing ensembles based on the needs of the congregation, the skills of the director, and the interests/abilities of willing participants.

Convening special ensembles as needed to support congregational life, including special liturgies, concerts, and special music for worship services.

Musical ensemble work is currently focused at TELC with collaborative opportunities with SML to be developed.

Creatively and actively recruit new participants and provide an atmosphere of musical learning, growth, and mutual care.

Community Engagement (104 hrs/year)

Participate with the Pastor, church staff members, and other leaders at both TELC and SML in facilitating connections with the wider community through our music program.

Provide vision, planning, and execution for events that engage with members of the Taneytown and Silver Run communities.

Program Management (3 hrs/week)

Determine and submit an annual budget request outlining the requirements for the music program.

Supervise the maintenance of the music library and all church-owned musical instruments.

Oversee music for all weddings and funerals held at TELC and SMC, pending prior schedule agreement and availability.

Maintain professional competency

Practice, perform, and attend professional education opportunities; funding requests for professional development should be submitted as part of the music program budget.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in music or comparable years of experience.

Knowledge of the respective instruments and keyboard abilities sufficient to play hymns, liturgy, and anthem accompaniments.

Knowledge of basic music theory, including simple transpositions or harmonizing a melody.

Ability to sing and play with accurate pitch and rhythm.

Experience in choral conducting.

Knowledge of appropriate church music from diverse sources and the role of music in Lutheran worship.

Knowledge of the thematic requirements of the liturgical church calendar.

Experience as a “team player” and ability to relate to others with good interpersonal skills.

APPROVED ABSENCE FROM DUTIES:

Paid Time Off allowance is as follows: 4 weeks during the contract year.

Paid Time Off may not be carried into a new contract year and compensation for unused time will not be given.

Requests for vacation, sick leave, and time off will be communicated to the supervisor and are subject to approval.
