Director of Music Ministry:
Darnestown Presbyterian Church (DPC) in Darnestown, Maryland is seeking a Director of Music Ministry for 20 hours a week to be part of our staff. The individual will be a key member working alongside the Pastor, Associate Pastor and Director of Operations, Committee Members, Choirs and Congregations as an integral member to bring music to the Congregation in services. We are looking for someone who wants to be part of our family.
We are looking for a Director who will work with the pastors in identifying the musical gifts of members and encourage them to grow. Worship at DPC is typically based around the lectionary passages of the day. We use the Presbyterian Glory to God Hymnal. Most importantly, we are looking for someone to join our vibrant staff team and community, who will be celebrated and valued as a crucial part of our ministry together.
DPC is searching for a Director of Music Ministry who will be a dynamic addition to our staff team and church community. Someone who is creative and flexible, someone who can adapt to different seasons and different kinds of services, and someone who uses the resources we have in our congregation to enhance our worship. We are looking for someone who has many “tools” in their toolbox, using different instruments or styles to allow them to interpret hymns in the most faithful way possible.
DPC’s Director should be an integral part of the church ministry team, cooperate with all parties, be diligent in preparation and performance for rehearsals and services, be present at moments as necessary for the proper functioning of the church and the flow of worship, and with input from the Pastor and Worship Committee and other members of the music ministry, take primary responsibility for choosing hymns for services that are seasonally and liturgically appropriate.
Responsibilities and Job Highlights:
Weekly worship
Provide for music during Sunday morning worship
Work with the pastor and worship committee to plan music that unifies and supports the weekly message
Plan, prepare, and play live organ and/or piano music as appropriate to each service of worship, including the prelude, the offertory, choral anthems, hymns, the postlude and other music as required
Utilize gifts and skills of choir and members in weekly worship by working with them to prepare solos, identify guest musicians, etc.
Choir direction
Rehearse, direct and coach the chancel choir in a collaborative and cooperative manner. This includes participation in recruitment and orienting new choir members
Lead and accompany the choir and congregation in Sunday morning worship and other special services with positivity, enthusiasm and heart
Bell choir experience preferred but not required
Provide for an environment of warmth and growth in the choir
Special services and events (including but not limited to Advent, Christmas Eve, Holy Week)
Participate in and lead music for special services such as Christmas Eve, Good Friday, and occasional evening services
Play for weddings and funerals/memorial services if available. (Musicians will be paid an additional fee for weddings and funerals)
Work with pastors in planning special services
Resource for other programs
Serve as resource for other church programs that may include music (Vacation Bible School, Children’s choir, youth choir)
Collaborate with local churches for performances of larger works to engage in community outreach (example: Juneteenth service)
Administrative
Prepare and maintain music budget in coordination with pastor and worship committee
Regular communication with choir and church office about music programs
Participate in weekly staff meetings, monthly worship committee meetings and seasonal worship planning meetings with the pastors
Procure music and maintain a music library that is accessible to the pastor and worship committee
Arrange for the appropriate tuning, maintenance, and repair of the organ and piano
Secure substitute musicians as needed
Qualifications / Technical Competencies:
Proven interpersonal and leadership skills
Proficiency in piano
Proficiency in organ
Skill in choir training, conducting and music selection
Proficiency in hand bells preferred but not required
Desired Expertise:
Expertise as a Director of Music
Familiarity with Presbyterian Church (USA) worship desired but not required.
Work Hours:
Part Time (20 Hours)
Bell choir: Conduct or support others in conducting rehearsals (provide practice times/dates)
