Position SummaryPIERCE COLLEGE IS SEEKING TO HIRE TWO (2) BASIC NEEDS NAVIGATORS

One position will be housed on the Puyallup campus.One position will be housed on the Fort Steilacoom campus.

The Basic Needs Navigator will engage in culturally sustaining case management and student care practices that center racial and identity equity to remove barriers and empower students to successfully navigate their Pierce College experience, particularly regarding accessing essential needs-related benefits and all forms of student financial support.The Basic Needs Navigator is dedicated to supporting students in accessing benefits related to food/housing insecurity, homelessness, and other basic needs programs and services. This includes relational engagement to eliminate inequities and to advance student belongingness, self-efficacy and agency, persistence, degree completion, and transfer/employment readiness. The Basic Needs Navigator partners across the district and collaborates with external stakeholders to improve normalizing help-seeking for students.This position reports to the Director of Basic Needs and requires regular and consistent attendance.

Essential FunctionsThe Basic Needs Navigator will be responsible for the following, but not limited to:

Case Management:

Provide culturally responsive and personalized case management services to advance the success of marginalized students.

Assist with implementing the Basic Needs Strategic Plan, partnering with Offices of Student Life, Student Government, and volunteers to operate a low-barrier food pantry to work towards a hunger-free campus.

Build and maintain a working knowledge of community resources and nurture relationships with stakeholders who align with Pierce College’s mission, vision, and values.

Build and maintain a working knowledge of policies and legislation that impact students and their access to basic needs.

Build and maintain working knowledge of internal resources and coach students through program funding options and processes.

Plan, evaluate, and consult with staff and outside entities to identify opportunities for equitable service intervention, explore solutions and alternatives, and use trauma-informed approaches that meet each student's goals and needs.

Maintain accurate and timely records of interactions with students and services provided using institutionally supported technology.

Engage in continuous self-led learning to recognize bias towards marginalized students.

Monitor the progress of caseload outcomes by analyzing progress reports and metrics.

Assessment:

Complete acuity assessments for caseload to identify strengths and challenges in academic, career, and personal pathway by identifying factors impacting academic progress.

Assess and refer eligible students for emergency grants. This includes outreach to engage students in requesting assistance, completing program intake, and follow up.

Assist with preparation of complex comprehensive plans, summaries, recommendations, progress and special reports.

Analyze data from multiple sources to inform service delivery. Collaborate with team to identify trends in need, identify programmatic barriers, and provide recommendations for solutions based on survey and intake responses.

Provide assessment of, and recommendations for, students referred through Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment (BITA) and similar programs.

Engagement and Retention:

Communicate with caseload frequently and intentionally through multiple methods, including but not limited to face-to-face meetings, college-supported technology solutions, e-mail, telephone, text messages.

Proactively identify current and potential needs and opportunities for resource referrals, and partner with students to gain early access to key college and basic needs resources before the need becomes critical.

Build sustainable relationships with students to better understand and support educational success in the context of their unique lived experiences.

Promote removal of barriers to degree completion by assisting students in navigating complex systems and connecting them with appropriate staff for interview and evaluation.

Engage in policy and social advocacy to advance and protect the rights of marginalized students and their access to basic needs resources.

Partner across the institution to improve policies, procedures, practices, and attitudes that may cause harm to students.

Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, education, social work/welfare, human services, public health, or related field from an accredited college or university

OR

equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education to Experience Equivalences:Associate Degree = 2 years | Bachelor’s Degree = 4 years | Master’s = 5 yearsExperience Required

Knowledge of and experience working with community-based organizations/agencies and experience with basic needs, benefits, and human services programs.

Experience responding to students/clients with intersecting identities and providing holistic case management, specifically working with persons with diverse backgrounds: socioeconomic, cultural, racial/ethnic, physical, emotional or learning disabilities, Veterans, LGBTQIA2S+.

Experienced with proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite applications and primary databases.

Special Requirements

The successful candidate must consent to and pass a criminal background check after a conditional offer of employment.

Terms of Employment:

These are full-time (40 hours per week) classified, overtime-eligible positions with Pierce College District. The positions are permanent after serving a 6-month probationary period. One Basic Needs Navigator will work location will be at Pierce College, and one Basic Needs Navigator will work from the Fort Steilacoom campus. Occasional travel to Pierce College campuses or sites may occur. Work hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with occasional evenings and weekend work, and occasional travel as required. This position may be subject to reassignment between campuses or sites.

Salary & Benefits:

The starting salary of this position is $5,241.00 - $6,227.00 monthly dependent upon qualifications, with periodic increments up to $6,384.00 monthly. However, your paycheck is just part of the total compensation package. There is an outstanding benefits package which is worth an additional value equivalent to about 30% of your salary. Physical Work Environment:

This position requires working indoors in an open office environment, which requires visual concentration on detail, dexterity, and precision and is subject to frequent noise and interruptions. This position may be eligible for occasional work from home.
