SUMMARYThe Director of Philanthropy Personal Giving is the lead fundraising professional responsible for major gifts. This position is responsible for the nationwide major gift program and the oversight of the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects and donors, primarily individuals, who have the capacity to make major gifts to Leader Dogs for the Blind. This position is expected to report to the Leader Dog campus on a regular basis.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Collaborates with the Chief Philanthropy and Marketing Officer, senior management and development team to identify priorities and strategies for major gift fundraising.

Leads the annual strategic plan for securing major gifts and long-term plans for donor stewardship and engagement.

Ensures the priorities of the Personal Giving/Special Events teams are aligned with the organization's strategic plan.

Manages the Personal Giving and Special Event teams.

Leads, develops, and is responsible for the budget process for major gifts and special events.

Leads the implementation and execution of a moves management process to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective major gift donors in support of the organization.

Directs major gift solicitations, identifying and prioritizing prospects; matching prospects with appropriate solicitors in the organization; prepares background information for solicitations and follow up as needed.

Maintains an active schedule of solicitations, cultivation visits, events, and stewardship activities that would result in increased donations to the organization. Personally manages a portfolio of 150 + donors and prospects.

Recruits, mentors, develops, and successfully manages a team to achieve the strategic objectives for the present and future needs of the organization.

Builds relationships with existing major donors and encourages giving through a variety of giving vehicles (cash, QCD, DAF, stock).

Leads the major gift team in assisting donors in evaluating gift opportunities and giving vehicles, preparing written proposals, and making recommendations most suitable for a particular donor.

Engages in best practices (i.e., creating written solicitation strategies, documenting actions and information through the efficient use of organizations development database, participating in prospect reviews).

Collaborates with Personal Giving, Marketing, and Community Engagement teams to create quarterly major donor cultivation events.

Works closely with the Manager of Special Events to analyze each event and determine projected ROI.

Assists Manager of Special Events in identifying key committee members.

Assists Manager of Special Events in creating descriptions for committee roles and responsibilities.

Collaborates with Manager of Special Events, Marketing, and Annual Giving teams to determine amount of support needed, timelines, and workflow leading up to each event.

Meets regularly with Special Events Manager to discuss budgets and deadlines (especially when securing venues and signing contracts with vendors).

Leads team members using a performance supported process including goal setting, feedback, and development.

Provides team members with opportunities for professional growth and development.

Collaborates with Personal Giving and Special Events teams weekly.

Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEBachelor's degree required. CFRE preferred. Qualified candidates will possess a minimum of 7 to 10 years of experience in non-profit fundraising with a proven track record of growing major gifts and managing special events. Demonstrated success developing a national major gifts program preferred. Previous experience in a director's capacity preferred. Supervisory experience required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Demonstrated initiative and achievement in national major gift fundraising.

The ability to create donor strategies, being mindful of an individual's passions and giving priorities.

Strong knowledge of fundraising principles and best practices.

Proficient and comfortable guiding donors through the gift cycle; from identification, cultivation, and solicitation, to ongoing stewardship.

This position may be required to be on campus when deemed necessary at the direction of management.

Expertise in various giving vehicles, including DAF, QCD, and stock.

Experience with best practices including the efficient use of database systems, including prospect tracking, a willingness to strengthen strategies through prospect review and an openness to share development techniques while learning the organization's system of best practices.

Highly motivated professional with a track record of building donor relationships and closing major gifts and demonstrated experience establishing relationships with major donors, as well as setting priorities for major gift solicitations.

Ability to work well under pressure, handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines; must have the ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

Possess sound business judgment, exercise professional conduct, understand and follow business ethics and standards, and maintain a high level of confidentiality in all duties.

Flexibility is required as priorities and circumstances dictate.

Ability to visit out-of-state donors and make presentations on behalf of the organization.

Outstanding verbal and written communication skills along with strong interpersonal and organizational abilities.

Exceptional ability to organize and motivate others, including administration, staff, peers, and volunteers.

The ability to function effectively as a member of a team, and a willingness to participate in activities and assignments that will benefit other members of the team or will contribute to the accomplishment of team objectives.

Ability to take initiative and make recommendations in resolving problems and provide guidance to other staff.

Proficient in latest version of Microsoft Office products.

Possess a valid driver's license with no restrictions and the ability to travel as needed. Must be comfortable with and willing to work around large dogs.

Willing to perform general public relations duties on behalf of Leader Dog (perform tours, answer general questions, be a professional and courteous representative of Leader Dog, etc.).

Ability to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions with employees that promote positive teamwork, as well as with volunteers, donors, clients and all constituents of Leader Dog. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.
