Position Summary:
The role of the Music Director is to work in consultation with the Pastor and Worship Ministry to select and present music that is worthy as an offering to God and an inspiration to the congregation. The Music Director provides engaging, creative, and energetic leadership to enhance the ministry of music within the congregation. Major responsibilities include directing the Chancel Choir, coordinating music with the worship theme and liturgy, and overseeing a variety of styles of musical expression to promote the music ministry and encourage participation from members and friends of the congregation.
Qualifications and Required Skills:
Competency with piano (preferred)
Competency with organ
Experience in directing a choir in a congregational setting
Knowledge of liturgy and Presbyterian worship as expressed through music
Positive attitude and ability to work well with adults, young adults, and children
Experience with various styles of classical, traditional, and contemporary music
Understanding that music is a part of the church’s ministry and spiritual life
Belief that music is a ministry and an offering to God and community, not an opportunity for performance
Bachelor’s degree in music from a recognized school or academy
Ability to pass all background checks and clearances
Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to:
Playing organ and/or piano during Sunday morning and other special worship services
Directing the Chancel Choir, including rehearsing, accompanying, and strengthening the choir
Developing music ministries for young adults, youth, and children
Collaborating with the Pastor on year-round worship planning, including selection of theologically appropriate hymns and musical offerings for weekly worship, funerals, and special events
Providing musical selections for publication in the Sunday bulletin
Arranging for the tuning of pianos and organ as needed and budgeted
Maintaining the choral library, ordering music and supplies, and overseeing licensing agreements
Providing administrative leadership for the Bell Choir, Dance Ministry, and other musical groups
Attending scheduled meetings with the minister and Worship Ministry
Communicating with office staff in a timely manner regarding music selections
Enlisting competent substitute choir leadership and organist when necessary
Maintaining reasonable availability through cell phone and email
General Information:
Position type: Part-time contract
Compensation: $18,000-$21,000/year
Three-month probationary period
Supervisor: Pastor, works closely with Worship Ministry
