Albemarle Corporation, a global leader in lithium, bromine, and catalyst solutions, is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Cathode Materials Scientist to join our dynamic Energy Storage R&D team in Kings Mountain, NC (and soon-to-move to the recently announced state-of-the-art Albemarle Technology Park in Charlotte, NC).As a key member of our R&D team, you'll have the opportunity to develop cutting-edge lithium-based products and technologies, push the boundaries of what's possible in the world of energy storage and make a real impact. Our products are critical components of the lithium-ion batteries powering everything from electric vehicles to pacemakers, and your work will help shape the future of energy!Key Responsibilities:• Foster a culture of safety, health, and environmental responsibility.• Design, propose and conduct experiments to develop new solid-state materials for advanced battery applications.• Generate new materials via novel scalable pathways, including high temperature solid-state synthesis process.• Characterize the composition, crystal structure and microstructure of cathode materials.• Design and conduct electrical/electrochemical performance measurements at both component and cell level.• Plan and execute statistical designs of experiment (DoE’s) to identify relevant factors and optimize performance.• Mentor junior team members, technicians, and interns, provide technical consultation to cross-functional partners.Desired Competencies:• Strong organizational and project management skills. Able to prioritize and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment• Deep understanding of lithium-ion batteries and cathode chemistry, especially high-nickel cathode materials, including composition-process-performance relationships• Hands-on wet chemistry and synthesis, characterization and testing of commercial lithium-ion battery materials.• Demonstrated proficiency in materials characterization and cell testing methodologies, data analysis and interpretation.• High attention to detail, accuracy and precision in experimental design and analysis of results• Strong communication skills and ability to simplify complexity for non-technical stakeholders.Physical Demands:• Must be able to work in a laboratory and dry room environment, requiring standing for 25% or more of the time.• Must have dexterity to handle delicate battery components and laboratory equipment.• Must be able to physically operate scientific equipment and instrumentsQualifications:• PhD in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related scientific discipline with a minimum of 1-3 years of post-graduate experience in lithium-ion batteries.• Strong technical knowledge and experience in battery materials for lithium-ion batteries, and a track record of delivery results.• Deep knowledge and strong hands-on experience in inorganic powder material synthesis, from wet chemistry to gas-solid/solid-solid high-temperature process• A curious, innovative, and highly collaborative mindset.Take your career to the next level and be a part of the energy revolution at Albemarle Corporation!
