Summit County Government is seeking a well-qualified Deputy Director of Human Resources to perform a variety of complex analytical, professional, technical and administrative duties related to Human Resources. Provides comprehensive assistance to the Director of Human Resources in the administration of human resources policies and procedures including compensation, employee benefits, recruitment, employee relations, training, and DEI initiatives; manages daily HR operations, and performs related administrative and professional work as required. This position will directly supervise a staff of five HR staff members. When required, this position will serve as the acting Human Resources Director.

The ideal candidate will have a well-rounded and diverse HR background with strong technical expertise and exceptional interpersonal and administrative skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong presentation skills, and the ability to maintain composure and professionalism in stressful and/or difficult situations are a must. Strong organizational skills and the ability to balance multiple priorities are also essential. The individual must be self-directed, highly organized, flexible, detail-oriented, and able to manage information and data in a strictly confidential manner. Critical thinking, developing solutions, and improving existing programs to meet the ever-changing needs of the organization are important aspects of this position.

The selected candidate will report to the HR Director and support the HR needs of all County Departments and Elected Offices. The ideal candidate will have a strong drive to grow professionally and develop within the County organization and will have a high level of involvement in succession planning in the HR Department.

This position is exempt, is an in-office position, and works Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm with additional hours as required. There may be some degree of flexible or remote work schedule.

Typical Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration or other related field is required (equivalent experience may be considered).

At least five years’ progressive HR experience within a public sector organization, in benefits administration, recruitment, training, and/or employee relations, including at least 2 years of management experience required.

SHRM/HRCI Professional or Senior Certification required. Master’s degree or other higher education or related training desired.

Must provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers and work well with a team.

Must have a valid Colorado driver’s license at the time of appointment and throughout employment. Will be required to successfully complete a background check prior to employment.
