The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at East Tennessee State University invites applications for the position of Department Chair to begin July 2025.The Department has 13 tenured/tenure track faculty, 4 full-time teaching colleagues, and 3 adjuncts as well as currently 49 majors and 19 graduate students. The department is known for its high-quality teaching, research, and outreach; and it has recently launched a Master of Science in Applied Data Science program in conjunction with the Computation and Research in Data Science (CaRDS) institute, the Department of Computing, and the Statistical Consulting Lab. This program builds on our history of providing internship experiences for students and preparing masters students for exciting careers in data science, operations research, and statistics. This is in addition to a Master of Science degree in Mathematical Sciences and undergraduate degree concentrations in statistics, computational applied math, mathematical sciences or mathematics education. for more information.In this 12-month position, the chair is responsible to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for providing leadership and departmental administration; providing administrative oversight of our large outreach into the community, which includes a substantial dual enrollment program; maintaining the collegial atmosphere of the department; and enhancing the professional development and research productivity of departmental faculty and staff.Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students and are expected to have an active, ongoing research program. The chair is expected to foster and promote scholarly productivity and visibility of a diverse and active faculty while supporting innovative and high-quality teaching.Required Qualifications:Ph.D. degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.A proven record of teaching and research appropriate for a tenured position at the Associate or full Professor level.Applicants should have demonstrated leadership ability, effective communication skills, and a history of campus and community involvement beyond the departmental level.Preferred Qualifications:Priority will be given to candidates in Data Science and Statistics who can teach courses in statistics at the Master’s level.Priority will be given to candidates with substantial leadership experience.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Demonstrated leadership abilityEffective communication skillsAbility to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students and an active, ongoing research program.Salary commensurate with experience.East Tennessee State University is an AA/EEO employer.
