Essential Duties:

A Food Safety & Quality Assurance (FSQA) and Compliance Specialist/Lead manages all the regulatory compliance issues, quality program standards, and external auditing bodies. The role is focused on Food Safety & Quality in the regulatory scope, ensuring compliance to Sara Lee Frozen Bakery and regulatory standards so SLFB products meet company and customer specifications, and providing support to all cross-functional teams of the bakery. The position is responsible for supporting various programs such as SQF, HACCP/HARPC, Quality Programs, Analyzing Trend Data to provide cross-functional team members/management for making sound decisions.

Position Summary:

The FSQA Compliance Specialist identifies and assists in the elimination of product concerns; maintains accurate, detailed laboratory and compliance records; makes decisions and provides guidance regarding food safety as well as product quality; supports initiatives to drive and monitor continuous improvement; and supports programs including:

Ensure Compliance to the following:

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) or Hazard Analysis Risk Based Preventive Controls (HARPC)/Food Safety Plans.

Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP).

Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).

Safe Quality Foods (SQF), Organic, RSPO, Kosher, Internal & External auditing, Army (Military), State (NCDA) & Federal (FDA) Audits.

Other relevant Food Safety Procedures (i.e. Allergen, Foreign Material Programs).

Manages internal and external audit programs including but not limited to setting audit schedules, managing external audits, performing audit preparation for SQF, GFCO, Organic, Kosher, NCDA and FDA audits.

Leads and manages the SQF certification and validation processes at the bakery.

Manages regulatory and SLFB compliance and updates to HACCP/HARPC/Food Safety plans, Food Defense and Quality Programs.

Leads and manages CAPA tracker/Action Registry generation, gap closure tracking and completion process for all internal and external audits.

Manages document control and documentation management including policies, plans, batch records, CCP, PC forms, Quality SOP’s, and SSOP’s etc.

Responsible for leading Trace/Recall Exercise’s (Forward & Backward Trace) to account for all finished product and/or ingredients and packaging materials used in the manufacture of SLFB products for potential recall.

Ensure effectiveness via use of risk assessments and CAPA that supports the findings.

Facilitates the roll-out of any new regulatory legislation and appropriate rules, changes to SLFB products.

Quality representative for Innovation projects to drive compliance, growth, Management of Change (MOC) process.

Responsible for fiscal period and monthly KPI reporting such as Environmental (EMP) Report, for Management Review.

Co-leads Food Safety team meeting, Food Defense and Food Fraud annual exercises with assistance from the FSQA Manager.

Drive and assist in SPC/RedZone data collection system to provide reduction/elimination of variation within processes.

Collect data for capability and shelf-life studies.

Monitor all Pre-requisite programs in regard to SQF such as Sanitation, Allergen verification programs etc.

Verification of adherence to product and material specifications including allergen validation.

Verification of manufacturing activities.

Develop capabilities in the shelf life and product evaluation programs.

Partners with other bakery cross functions to drive Quality process improvement and execution of Root Cause Analysis for all non-conforming products.

Provide support towards consumer complaint reduction and improvements.

Lead the Food Safety team by being the first line of defense from a consumer perspective.

Daily Record review/ Pre-shipment review of Production and FSQA Paperwork.

Other duties as assigned by FSQA Manager.

Assist in New Product Qualifications and processing of finished product specs & photo standards.

Product Continuous Improvement Projects as assigned.

A trained designee will be appointed by FSQA Manager to cover for absences or vacancies.

Education and Work Experience:

Preferred University degree in technical discipline or general sciences. Preferred: Food Science, Microbiology Biology, Engineering or Chemistry.

2 to 5 years of related experience in Quality Assurance (QA), Quality Control (QC) and with regulatory-facing experience as a plus in a Food Manufacturing/Pharmaceutical industry required, with 2 years in a manufacturing environment under FDA and/or USDA.

Preferred PCQI Certification, HACCP certification required.

Applied knowledge of cGMP, HACCP/HARPC, Food Safety, SQF, BRC, FSSC 22000/GFSI audits, FDA 21 CFR 110, FSMA Rule, Gluten Free, Organic, Kosher certifications etc. a plus.

NetSuite and/or SAP experience required, with a minimum of two (2) years.

Proficient knowledge of performing a Trace Exercise (Forward & Backward Trace).

Knowledge of environmental programs and practices and software (3M, Allergen 3D Reveal, Veratox, Neogen, LIMS etc.) preferred.

CAPA, RCA, 5 Why problem-solving knowledge.

Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc.) programs required.

Proficient knowledge of Alchemy software for tracking and trending Quality Trainings for all bakery teams.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Demonstrate leadership in the areas of food safety and plant regulatory affairs.

Comprehensive experience with FDA and/or USDA Rules and Regulations.

Must have strong organizational and leadership skills.

Strong ability to prioritize tasks.

Demonstrated ability to problem solve.

Strong computer skills.

Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate across all organizational levels within the company.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to wear personal protective equipment while performing job (i.e. safety glasses, ear plugs, bump cap, hair net, steel toe, slip resistant safety boots).

May be required to work in hot (up to 102o F) for intervals of 45 minutes.

May be required to work in cold and/or wet environments of a minimum of 0o F.

Must be able to constantly stand, stoop, walk, bend, push or pull for the duration of shift, which may last up to 12 hours.

May be required to lift up to 40 pounds.

May work in Production or Warehouse storage areas.

May be required to climb ladders/stairs.

Must have the visual acuity to perform possible pre-op duties and/or read paperwork and labels.
