Position Overview

San Diego Hunger Coalition is seeking a Government Affairs Manager to lead our policy and legislative advocacy efforts. This role will focus on advancing the San Diego Hunger Coalition's policy agenda by conducting in-depth policy analysis, developing advocacy strategies, and collaborating with key stakeholders. The successful candidate will monitor legislative developments and support strategic decision-making to address nutrition security at local, state, and federal levels. Strong writing and communication skills are critical for producing policy briefs, white papers, and other advocacy materials.

Key Responsibilities

Policy Analysis & Research

Monitor legislative and policy changes at all government levels to identify opportunities and challenges related to nutrition security.Conduct research and data analysis to guide policy development and advocacy.Prepare clear and concise policy recommendations to inform strategic decisions.

Legislative Strategy & Advocacy

Develop legislative strategies to support the San Diego Hunger Coalition's mission, focusing on hunger and nutrition security.Draft persuasive materials such as position papers, legislative updates, and testimony for advocacy initiatives.Build and maintain relationships with government officials, regulatory bodies, and other key stakeholders.Create and deliver field materials, talking points, and scripts for media, public engagement, and stakeholder communication.Support the creation of issue briefs, white papers, and presentations for advocacy campaigns.Engage and mobilize the community by developing networks like Hunger Free Activists.

Fund Development Support

Track advocacy outcomes and report on progress to support organizational fundraising efforts.Prepare written content for donor presentations and funding proposals that align with advocacy objectives.

General Responsibilities

Align your work with San Diego Hunger Coalition's overall mission and goals.Stay current on legislative processes and hunger issues, ensuring advocacy strategies are up to date with best practices.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Law, or a related field, or 5 years of equivalent experience.Minimum of 2 years of experience in government affairs, public policy, or legislative advocacy with a focus on policy analysis and writing.Proven ability to write policy briefs, white papers, talking points, and advocacy materials.Deep knowledge of legislative processes at local, state, and federal levels.Experience managing coalitions, meetings, and advocacy campaigns.Strong research and analytical skills with the ability to translate complex information into actionable recommendations.Experience in grassroots advocacy and managing part-time organizers or interns.Bilingual proficiency is strongly preferred.Knowledge of nutrition security issues and public benefits programs (e.g., WIC, CalFresh) is highly desirable.Key Competencies

This position may involve occasional travel or attendance at events during non-work hours.
