A daycare director typically has a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:

Observing children to ensure they are safe and learning at their own pace.

Establishing reasonable rules for behavior and enforcing them consistently.

Manage enrollment process for new families, conducting tours and interviews as needed.

Education:

Require an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or a related field. These programs typically include courses in early childhood development, child psychology, child development, and childcare management.

Training & Experience:

Daycare directors typically receive on-the-job training in the form of an internship while earning their bachelor’s degree. During an internship, a daycare director will learn the daily operations of a daycare center and will work closely with the center’s director. They will also learn about the state’s regulations and requirements for daycare centers. Daycare directors can also receive training through previous work experience. Some daycare directors begin as teachers or assistant teachers before advancing to a daycare director position. Others may work as a teacher before becoming a teacher’s aide and then a daycare director.

Certifications & Licenses:

Daycare directors need to obtain a state license to operate a daycare. Requirements vary from state to state, but most require candidates to have completed training in early childhood education or a related field. Some states also require students to pass an exam to demonstrate their knowledge of early childhood development.
