What We Are Looking For:

The Message Center RN works under the supervision of the Supervisor, Message Center RN and Manager, Message Center RN. Integrates RN nursing processes (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to provide services and continuity of care for the patient in the Nurse Message Center. Utilizes knowledge of basic nursing principles, practices, and ethics to perform duties within the RN Scope of Practice. Interfaces with staff and clinicians to assure message center efficiency and maximum productivity. Collaborates with message center personnel, ensuring productivity while emphasizing completeness and concern for the patient.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DELIVERABLES:

Effectively utilizes RN scope of practice as it pertains to message center job functions, this can include handling call queues, triage, in-basket management, and providing patient education to patients and families.

Completes medication refill orders based on provider standing orders.

Collaborates with message center staff on a day-to-day basis ensuring job tasks are performed and completed in a productive, high-quality manner, and in accordance with established departmental procedures and standards.

Plans, implements, and evaluates care and education for the patients, families and other health professionals about specific illnesses.

Functions as a resource person and provides expertise to clinic and message center staff, physicians, patients, and other departments regarding medical and nursing issues.

Documents in the EMR according to established policy. Processes necessary charting and paperwork, while maintaining patient confidentiality.

Actively works on the development of evaluation of standards of care.

Maintains ongoing knowledge and understanding of current insurance information and regulations affecting the patient and family (i.e., CCS and other payers).

Instructs and/or schedules patients regarding tests/procedures ordered by a physician; assists with authorization; notifies the patient/parent of test results after physician review. Obtains records and radiology/lab studies for new and established patients.

Provides high-quality care by adhering to departmental procedures and standards of care. Uses and recommends new methods or processes within his/her practice that improve quality, efficiency, and effectiveness.

Assist with writing/updating guidelines and procedures within the department.

Coordinates and actively participates in the cross-training of other team members.

Ability to collaborate, teach, support, and function in a teaching organization that builds, coaches, and embraces interns, students, and residency programs.

Ability to travel to other clinics as necessary; must have a reliable vehicle, valid driver’s license, and auto insurance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Associate of Science Degree in Nursing required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Active and unrestricted California Registered Nurse license required; current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required (must be American Heart Association or Red Cross accredited program); valid CA Driver’s License, and auto insurance. As a requirement of this position, you must receive EPIC certification for the module you have been hired into.

Experience: 2+ years of experience as a Registered Nurse is required. Experience in an outpatient setting is preferred.

Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Computer competency; able to read; write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position.

Interpersonal Skills: Exhibit strong interpersonal abilities to communicate effectively and collaborate with patients, families, healthcare professionals, and interdisciplinary teams. This entails active listening, empathy, cultural sensitivity, and the capacity to build rapport and trust across diverse healthcare environments.

Essential Mental Abilities: Possess critical mental faculties to analyze complex medical situations, make informed decisions, and adapt to evolving patient needs. This includes strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
